'Dude' Dominates Ethanol Classic Preliminary By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 2) - After 70 feature victories and seven track championships, defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion Danny Lasoski definitely knows his way around Knoxville Raceway. "The Dude" needed every bit of his experience at the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval to hold off Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser and win the Preliminary Feature when the Fourth Annual Iowa Ethanol Classic opened Friday. "We're glad to get a win, and get locked in for tomorrow night," Lasoski said. "The Beef Packers car ran great. As long as we race up front and stay consistent, we'll be OK." Lasoski and the #83 Beef Packers Eagle were the class of the field, pacing the 49-car qualifying session, winning the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and leading all but one lap in the feature. He received his eighth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after recording a 15.344-second, 117.310-m.p.h., lap in time trials. "The Dude" was dominant in every race except the Channellock Dash. He earned the right to start the feature inside the second row by following Tyler Walker and Kinser across the finish line in the five- lap race. The third-place finish couldn't keep him from starting on the pole, however. Walker drove the #35 Air Sep Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature, only to have a first-corner collision with Stevie Smith send Steve Kinser flipping. Tim Shaffer was also involved in the crash. Lance Blevins and Kerry Madsen crashed in turn two as the green flag replaced the red, collecting Smith, Brooke Tatnell and Donny Schatz. When Walker and Mark Kinser were unable to negotiate a good start, Lasoski and Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild replaced them on the front row. Lasoski burst into the lead, and Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim around Haudenschild high between turns one and two as the race resumed. Walker took the low line through the second corner to pass Haudenschild for third place early in lap four. Randy Anderson stopped in turn two to bring out the caution flag three laps later. Sammy Swindell, the 1983 Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion, steered his #1 Channellock Stealth into the low groove in the third corner to pass Skip Jackson and Haudenschild for fourth place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Kinser made a run at Lasoski in the high groove midway through the race, but was unable to surge ahead. He kept pace with "The Dude," and took the lead between turns three and four late in the 11th lap. Lasoski regained the lead the next time around when Kinser tried to block him in the low groove, only to have his momentum carry him toward the outside retaining wall in the second corner. "The Dude" was only .3 seconds ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. He increased his advantage to 1.6 seconds within a lap as Mark had problems with a pack of backmarkers. Swindell was in fourth place with 3 1/2 laps remaining when his engine lost power on the back straightaway, allowing Haudenschild to pass him. Sammy had to settle for a 19th-place finish. Lasoski was 1.4 seconds ahead of Kinser when he took the checkered flag in his third Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "I told the crew we'd have to do it on the low side," Danny said. "After the dash, I knew Mark and Tyler would be tough up top. Mark must have really gotten a run off (turn) four there, but when he went down I knew he had too much speed to hold it." Finishing 1-4 in the Preliminary Feature gave Lasoski, Kinser, Walker and Haudenschild the luxury of starting Saturday's Channellock Dash in that order. Completing the top 10 were Knoxville Raceway points leader Terry McCarl, Schatz, Skip Jackson, Daryn Pittman, 23rd- starting Jeff Swindell and Craig Dollansky. Schatz suffered flat left rear tires during both of his qualifying laps, but raced into fifth place from the fifth row in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race to qualify for the evening's main event. He drove the #15 Park Stores Maxim past 16 cars to finish sixth in feature. Ignition problems in the #1BK Networks Eagle forced Johnny Herrera into the pit area just seconds before the green flag fell in the feature. Brent Antill replaced Herrera and started on the 12th row. Andy Hillenburg flipped hard after colliding with Stevie Smith early in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He spent the rest of the program in the infield as a precaution. WoO
