'WILD CHILD' WINS KNOXVILLE RACEWAY OPENER By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (September 23) - Jac Haudenschild's drought between World of Outlaws feature victories lasted almost two years before he won the Second Preliminary Feature at the Knoxville Nationals in August. A little more than a month passed before he stood in victory lane at Knoxville Raceway again. "The Wild Child" drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into the lead early in the first lap and raced ahead of the 24-car field throughout the Preliminary Feature Friday when the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout opened a $60,960 event at "The Home of the Nationals." "We struggled some early in the year, but we made some changes in our crew and things started getting better," Haudenschild told the near- capacity crowd. "We're getting stronger." "The Wild Child" definitely had the strongest engine in the field. Steve Beitler and two other 1994 Nationals feature winners - Steve Kinser and Andy Hillenburg - suffered blown power plants during the qualifying session. The early misfortune kept Beitler in the pit area for the remainder of the program. Kinser was unable to start the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race, but qualified for the evening's main event by winning the "B" Feature. Andy's crew replaced his engine in time for him to finish fourth in the first heat. Haudenschild started the Preliminary Feature on the front row next to Vivarin Dash winner Craig Dollansky. They raced wheel-to-wheel into turn one before "The Wild Child" took the lead. Sammy Swindell, who passed his brother, Jeff, during the first lap, drove the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins deep into the second corner to take the runner-up spot from Dollansky early in lap two. "The Wild Child" entered lapped traffic with a 10-car-length advantage six laps into the race. Jeff Swindell passed Dollansky for third before stopping on the front straightaway with the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim losing power steering fluid. Dollansky restarted the feature in third place, and regained the runner-up spot from Sammy immediately after the green flag replaced the yellow. Swindell returned the favor with a low move into turn one the next time around. Danny Lasoski, who recently claimed his sixth Knoxville Raceway championship, started the feature next to Kinser on the sixth row. They were running in fifth- and sixth-place, respectively by the midpoint of the 20-lap race. Haudenschild, a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers with eight laps remaining, caught the backmarkers again two laps later. Sammy was reeling in "The Wild Child" during the 16th lap when his left front tire lost air pressure. The 1983 Knoxville Nationals champion surrendered second place, restarted the race at the back of the pack and finished 21st. With Brent Antill and Todd Ribick restarting between them, Haudenschild ran away from Dollansky when the green flag replaced the yellow. At the same time, Kinser steered the #11 Valvoline Maxim into the low groove in turn three to pass Lasoski and Joe Gaerte. "The Dude" followed Kinser past Gaerte for fourth place. Dollansky was 12 car-lengths behind when "The Wild Child" took the checkered flag. Kinser, the 10-time Nationals champion, and Lasoski claimed the final two automatic starting positions in Saturday's Snap-on Tools Dash by finishing third and fourth. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Gaerte, Aaron Berryhill, Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser, Kenny Jacobs, Terry McCarl and Hillenburg. Mark received his 10th Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year for being the fastest qualifier in the 47-car field. His 15.936-second qualifying lap was .017 seconds faster than Haudenschild's best effort. Hillenburg, only the 25th-fastest qualifier, started the Preliminary Feature outside the 11th row. He steered his #2 STP J&J around 12 sprinters to finish in 10th place.
