'WILD CHILD' WINS NATIONALS' SECOND PRELIMINARY FEATURE By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (August 18) - A World of Outlaws official was joking with Jac Haudenschild recently about him winning both big-money races at Eldora Speedway - the King's Royal and "The Historic Big One" - since he last won a Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout feature. "I guess you guys are going to have to start paying more money," he said. "The Wild Child" waited for the richest sprint car racing event in history - the 34th Annual Knoxville Nationals - to win his first World of Outlaws feature race in almost two years (since September 12, 1992, at San Jose Speedway) Thursday. "Things finally turned around for us," Haudenschild said in victory lane. "We've had some bad luck the last couple of years, so we're glad to get in the winner's circle." Although he started the #22 Pennzoil Maxim inside the second row, Haudenschild burst into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. But before could complete the first lap, Keith Kauffman and Garry Brazier collided and flipped into the wall in turn one. Sid Blandford was also involved in the crash, but was able to continue racing. Front-row starters Kevin Huntley and Jerry Richert, Jr., blocked "The Wild Child" from duplicating his earlier move to the front when the green flag replaced the red. But that didn't stop Haudenschild from taking over first place deep in the third corner. As fellow Ohioan Dave Blaney moved in to challenge "The Wild Child" for the lead, his brother, Dale, brought out the caution flag when he stopped in turn two late in the second lap. Jeff Swindell made it a three- car battle for the lead when the race resumed, taking the runner-up spot from "The Buckeye Bullet" in the third corner. Blaney returned the favor on the back straightaway the next time around. Mark Kinser, whose crew replaced two engines in the #5M Maxim before he won the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race, raced past six cars in the first three laps. He traded sixth place with Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Sammy Swindell three times in the next three laps before the two bumped on the back straightaway. The slight collision knocked the rear bumper off the #5M, bringing out the caution flag and causing Mark to be sent to the back of the pack. The caution flag was flying again before another lap was completed, as Mark stopped on the front stretch. The #5M was towed into the pit area, and Mark was credited with a 19th-place finish. After trading the runner-up spot with Jeff during the race's middle stages, "The Buckeye Bullet" passed Haudenschild for the lead deep in the first corner early in the 11th lap. Blaney opened a comfortable lead within a lap, and caught the backmarkers with eight laps remaining. He was a half-straightaway ahead of the field when the #10 Vivarin J&J lost its left rear wheel in turn four as flagman Doug Clark reached for his white flag. "Dave's been going fast all year, and he drove by us like we were tied," Haudenschild admitted in victory lane. "I guess we'll have to be a little sharper Friday night." "The Wild Child" returned to the front of the field when the cars lined up for the two-lap sprint to the checkered flag, and beat Jeff to the finish line by four car-lengths for the $3,500 first prize. With the white flag flying, Sammy made one last run at the Nationals' points lead. He took third place from Huntley in turn three, only to be passed in the fourth corner. Sammy's fourth-place finish left him in a tie with Steve Kinser for the points lead entering Friday's Vivarin Pole Position Scramble race, the last factor used to determine Saturday's championship feature lineup. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Stevie Smith, Steve Kent, Jaymie Moyle, Richert, Blaney and "B" Feature winner Aaron Berryhill.
