HILLENBURG TURNS IN PERFORMANCE 'FIT FOR A KING' By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (August 17) - Richard Petty had never seen a sprint car race before the World of Outlaws' opening-night program at the 34th Annual Knoxville Nationals. Knowing that, fellow STP racer Andy Hillenburg presented "The King of the Stock Car Racing" with a performance "fit for a king." "I'm glad to win the race for STP," Hillenburg told the capacity crowd from victory lane. When asked if there was any added pressure with Petty watching him," Andy said, "I don't know. It was good that Richard could come by. I'm glad he could be a part of the Nationals. It's always good to have STP here because they really help our race team." Nine-time Knoxville Nationals champion Steve Kinser applied all the pressure Hillenburg could handle, forcing him to race flawlessly during the final 15 laps. Hillenburg steered his #2 STP J&J deep into the third corner to take the lead from polesitter Steve Smith late in the sixth lap. Steve, father of 1993 Knoxville Nationals runner-up, Stevie, and Ms. Motorsports, Summer, last raced at the Nationals 15 years ago when the sprinters were run without wings. "The King of the Outlaws" raced past Smith the next time around, setting up the 15-lap war for the checkered flag. The leaders caught the backmarkers midway through the 20-lap Preliminary Feature, and Kinser immediately started applying the pressure. "The King of the Outlaws" was reeling in Hillenburg early in the 14th lap when Andy threaded the #2 between Bob White and John Kearney to open a four-car-length advantage. Hillenburg rode the rim around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval while Kinser kept the #11 Valvoline Maxim in the low groove. They raced wheel-to- wheel through the second corner with three laps remaining, and Andy won a back-straightaway drag race to maintain the lead. Kinser made several runs at Hillenburg during the white-flag lap, but was two car-lengths behind when the crowd stood to cheer Andy taking the checkered flag. "I messed up there once and got up on the berm in (turn) one," Hillenburg admitted, "but we picked up the momentum again. I saw Kinser again in the last lap coming out of two. I thought I was far enough ahead of him. We kind of squeezed him off there on the back straightaway, but it's nothing he wouldn't have done. We were just racing hard, and I'm glad we won for STP." Outside polesitter Joe Gaerte finished the Preliminary Feature in third place. Terry McCarl, a Knoxville Raceway regular who led the World of Outlaws invaders into the high groove, finished fourth. Rounding out the top 10 were Kenny Jacobs, 12th-starting Johnny Herrera, Smith, Billy Pauch, Knoxville Raceway point standings leader Danny Lasoski and Frankie Kerr. San Jose Speedway champion Randy Hannagan, one of several Nationals rookies in the field from California, set quick-time and won the "B" Feature. He passed seven sprinters from his 11th-row starting position to finish 14th. Knoxville veteran Jeff Tuttle brought the crowd its feet during the white flag lap of the Third Heat Race when he blocked a Kinser passing attempt on the back straightaway to pull out the victory.
