KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 9, 2002)-- Goodyear drivers Jac Haudenschild and Johnny Herrera are poised to make strong runs at victory in Saturday's main event of the 42nd Annual Mopar Knoxville Nationals.
The four-day event, held at Knoxville Raceway, awards points through time trials and a series of races building to Saturday's main event. Half the field competed in Wednesday's events and half competed Thursday. The survivors will return Friday.
Haudenschild, racing on Goodyears, is fifth in points going into Friday's second round of events with 483 tallies to his credit. Herrera, another Goodyear ace, is eighth with 477.
Joey Saldana leads all drivers with 495 points.
Goodyear drivers dominated time trials Thursday as Haudenschild, Herrera, Stevie Smith and Jeff Mitrisin qualified second through fifth, respectively. Combined with Brian Paulus' fifth-place qualifying run Wednesday, Goodyear drivers took five of the possible 10 top-five spots in the two nights of time trials.
Many of the 118 teams competing in the event come from the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series, but the sprint car racing classic draws teams from around the world. This year's field includes drivers from 27 states, plus teams from Canada and Australia.
Paulus went on to win the B Main Wednesday. Goodyear driver Tony Norem won his heat race on Goodyear tires Thursday before Haudenschild finished fourth in that night's feature. Herrera finished sixth in the same race and Smith was 10th.
The top 50 point-getters from Wednesday and Thursday are locked into a starting berth in one of the races Saturday. The exact starting positions for Saturday's elimination races will be determined Friday.
