MARK KINSER DOMINATES KNOXVILLE RACEWAY FEATURE By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (May 5) - Mark Kinser may not make many decisions concerning the #5M Wirtgen Maxim, but as long as the car performs like it did Saturday at Knoxville Raceway he'll be happy. "When Dad (Karl Kinser, his car owner and crew chief) and I first got together, I wanted to do some things differently than he did. He just told me to shut up and drive the car," Mark said after recording a flag-to-flag victory in the World of Outlaws' "A" Feature at Knoxville Saturday night. "About the only input I've had concerned the number on the car. Dad's number has always been 11, and I figured that number would always be associated with Steve (Kinser). I've been with Chuck Merrill for about six years now, and I wanted to stay with his number - 5M." The World of Outlaws' feature racing program was run a week later than originally scheduled (April 29th) because heavy rains made Knoxville's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval unsafe for racing. Kinser, who finished fourth in the April 28th Preliminary Feature, earned the right to start Saturday's 30-lap main event on the outside pole by following Dave Blaney across the finish line in the Snap-on Tools Dash. He steered the #5M around Blaney in the fourth corner as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and was never challenged as the green flag flew throughout the final 27 laps. Mark was 15 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when fast- qualifier Chris Walraven allowed the #56 sprinter to spin to a stop in turn three late in the third lap. Within three laps after the green flag replaced the yellow, Kinser had returned to his 15-car-length comfort zone. He caught the backmarkers during the 10th lap, but rarely slowed as he raced through lapped traffic with ease. Mark was a full straightaway ahead of "The Buckeye Bullet" with 11 laps remaining when he caught Second Heat Race winner Jerry Richert, Jr. Blaney closed to within 10 car-lengths before Kinser passed Richert with a high move into turn one two laps later. Mark had lapped all but nine cars in the 24-car field when he took the checkered flag with Blaney racing down the back straightaway. "That was probably the best car I've ever driven at Knoxville," Kinser said in victory lane. Defending Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski finished the main event in third place, and Andy Hillenburg followed Johnny Herrera across the finish line to round out the top five. Jeff Swindell finished sixth, ahead of Skoal Outlaw Series points leader Jac Haudenschild, Craig Dollansky, Joe Gaerte and Sammy Swindell. Greg Hodnett, winner of the Hard Charger Award at last year's Knoxville Nationals, raced past Stevie Smith on the front straightaway with the checkered flag flying to claim 11th place. Hodnett received his third Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for passing nine sprinters from his 10th-row starting position. The World of Outlaws will take a week off before invading the Terre Haute Action Track Friday (May 12th), Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL, Saturday and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN, Sunday.
