'WILD CHILD' WINS VALVOLINE CLASSIC OPENER By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (June 23) - Knoxville Raceway has been a source of rejuvenation for Jac Haudenschild during the last year. He snapped a two-year winless streak by capturing the Second Preliminary Feature at the Knoxville Nationals last August and came back to win an "A" Feature there a month later. With Dave Blaney passing him for the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings recently, "The Wild Child" was looking forward to returning to Knoxville for the Fourth Annual Valvoline Classic. Haudenschild flashed the form that pushed him atop the World of Outlaws points race Friday, leading all 20 laps on his way to winning the Preliminary Feature. "The guys have done a great job," Haudenschild said, referring to the #22 Pennzoil Maxim's crew. "We've had some bad luck here lately, but they stuck with it. They're the ones who stay up all night working on the car. They sure gave me a good car tonight." Haudenschild, the second-fastest qualifier in the 48-car field, earned the right to start the feature outside the second row by finishing fourth in the Vivarin Dash. The final lap of the Vivarin Dash produced some of the most exciting action on the World of Outlaws' tour this year. Randy Hannagan was leading Johnny Herrera and Haudenschild out of turn four with the checkered flag in sight when he and Herrera collided on the front straightaway. Haudenschild and three-time defending Valvoline Classic champion Steve Kinser swerved to avoid Hannagan while Herrera took the checkered flag, allowing Hannagan to finish second. Kinser won a front-straightaway drag race with Haudenschild for third place. As the green flag fell in the feature, Herrera took the lead from the pole while "The Wild Child" raced past Kinser. He then passed Hannagan in turn two and took the lead with a fourth-corner pass of Herrera. Herrera battled Haudenschild for the lead in every corner before falling behind by six car-lengths during lap seven. The leaders entered lapped traffic two laps later. Kinser, who dropped as far back as fifth early, charged back into second place midway through the race. He made a run at the lead the next time around, but Haudenschild was equal to the challenge. Kinser was still pressuring "The Wild Child" for the lead with six laps remaining when he stopped his #11 Quaker State Maxim in turn four because a nozzle line had been knocked loose. As the green flag replaced the yellow, Mark Kinser took the high road into the fourth corner to pass Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Stevie Smith for third place. Within three laps, Haudenschild opened a 10-car-length advantage on his closest pursuers as Mark challenged Herrera for the runner-up spot. Mark steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim deep into turn three to pass Herrera for second place with two laps remaining, but was unable to make a run at the lead. "The Wild Child" was 10 car-lengths ahead of Mark when he took the checkered flag for his first Preliminary Feature victory this season. Herrera finished the evening's main event in third place, ahead of six-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski, "B" Feature winner Andy Hillenburg, Blaney, 20th-starting Jeff Swindell, Skip Jackson and Aaron Berryhill. Mark Kinser received his 11th Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 15.619-second lap. With each Snap-on Tools Heat Race featuring an impressive field, five of the nine fastest qualifiers - Terry McCarl, Lance Blevins, Brent Antill, Hillenburg and Greg Hodnett - failed to qualify for the Vivarin Dash. Mark picked the #4 inversion pill, giving Herrera - the eighth-fastest qualifier - the pole position in the five-lap race.
