Swindell Wins Featherlite Feature at Knoxville By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (April 28) -- Sammy Swindell put himself in position to extend a long-standing winning streak Friday when he won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Featherlite Preliminary Feature at Knoxville Raceway. Swindell has won a main event in April of each even-numbered year since 1986. In all, Sammy has won 23 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features in April. Friday's $5,000 victory in the Preliminary Feature was his first visit to victory lane this season. It gave Swindell the pole position in Saturday's Second CHANNELLOCK Dash. The 1983 Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion was the fifth-fastest qualifier in 54-car field. He won the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race, the First CHANNELLOCK Dash and held off seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski throughout the 25-lap Preliminary Feature. "I knew as long as I kept Danny outside me getting into turns one and two, we'd be alright," Sammy explained. "We've been hurting a little on the starts on these tires, but Goodyear's been working really hard, and they've gotten us some better tires. Maybe we can start winning some races now. "The way the track was tonight, it was going to be tough to pass someone unless they made a mistake. I just tried to stay away from anyone, to not get into any trouble. We pretty much used this tire up anyway, so there was really no need to push too hard." Swindell and Lasoski raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway and through turn one as the green flag waved in the evening's main event, before Sammy surged ahead in the second corner. Joey Saldana steered his #17 HEM Saw Eagle into the low groove between turns three and four to pass Fourth NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Stevie Smith for fourth place late in the opening lap. Dale Blaney handled Andy Hillenburg's challenge late in lap four, then took the low line through the second corner to pass Smith for fifth place the next time around. Swindell was .9 seconds ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic during the seventh lap. "The Dude" narrowed the gap to .5 seconds when the leaders slowed behind a pack of backmarkers midway through the race. Sammy drove his #1 CHANNELLOCK Stealth through the lapped traffic, however, and was 1.7 seconds ahead by lap 15. Swindell, who also won the Featherlite Preliminary Feature in 1997, continued to extend his advantage during the final five laps and took the checkered flag with 2.2 seconds to spare. "I want to send my prayers out to (Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series employees) Connie and George Bayless in Missouri," Sammy said graciously. "She has cancer, and we wish her all the best." Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser and Saldana earned the second-row starting positions in Saturday's Second CHANNELLOCK Dash by finishing third and fourth, respectively. Blaney finished in fifth place ahead of Smith and Hillenburg. Randy Hannagan steered Junior Holbrook's #8H Energy Release Eagle around Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Danny Wood with 1 1/4 laps remaining for ninth place. Defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series and Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion Mark Kinser drove the #5M Mopar Maxim into 10th place. Wood, the leader in the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year point standings, received the first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his career. He paced the qualifying session with a 15.658-second, 114.957-m.p.h., lap around the Knoxville's famous semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. P.J. Chesson drove the #V12 Wirtgen Maxim for eight-time Knoxville Raceway car owner champion Guy Forbrook as Greg Hodnett continued to recuperate and Tyler Walker competed in the Auto Club 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National event at California Speedway. Chesson qualified 11th- quick, finished third in the Third NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race, 10th in the First CHANNELLOCK Dash and 23rd in the Preliminary Feature.
