'Dude' Comes Back to Win Knoxville Finale By Richard Day

KNOXVILLE, IA (April 29) -- Business and pleasure rarely mix -- especially on the race track. Danny Lasoski has found the combination of Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series races at Knoxville Raceway rather pleasurable in recent years, however. "The Dude" won his third "A" Feature in the last five Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series events at Knoxville Raceway Saturday on Amoco Night. After losing several positions early, Lasoski passed pole- sitter Sammy Swindell late in the 21st lap and led the final 4 1/4 for his fourth main event victory of the year. "I don't know what happened there at the beginning -- we just went backwards like we were standing still," Lasoski admitted, "but this Eagle chassis, Wesmar motor and these Hoosier tires were the right combination. I don't think Hoosiers have ever won here at Knoxville, and I'm glad to be the first. I'm just glad to be back in Knoxville!" Lasoski, the runner-up in Friday's Featherlite Preliminary Feature, earned the right to start the main event outside the front row by following Swindell across the finish line in the Second CHANNELLOCK Dash. Swindell, "The Dude" and Joey Saldana raced three-abreast through the first two corners as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Sammy was the first down the back straightaway, while Saldana surged ahead of Lasoski. Steve Kinser, who spun then passed four cars to finish fourth in the Second CHANNELLOCK Dash, relegated Danny to fourth place with an inside move into turn two early in the second lap. Lasoski and "The King of the Outlaws" took turns passing each other during the fifth lap, before Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Donny Schatz took the #15 Parker Stores Maxim for a spin in turn four. Dale Blaney used a slide move in the first corner to pass "The Dude" as the green flag replaced the yellow, but Lasoski turned the #83 Beef Packers Eagle sharply to maintain his running position. Kinser was trying to pass Saldana high in the second corner early in lap eight when he bounced off the retaining wall. He regained control of the #11 Quaker State Maxim as Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Jac Haudenschild spun in the first corner. Saldana challenged Swindell for the lead before Kinser took the high line around Joey for second place as the race resumed. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader continued to battle for the lead midway through the race, racing ahead of Swindell in turn one only to have Sammy regain first place in turn two. Swindell was 1.1 seconds ahead of Kinser when the leaders entered lapped traffic during the 14th lap. Lasoski used an inside move into the second corner to pass Saldana for third place one lap later. Kinser threatened to take the lead low in turn four late in lap 18. Lasoski caught him two laps later, and used an inside move through the fourth corner to take over second place. "The Dude" executed an identical move to pass Swindell for the lead late in the 21st lap. Swindell, Kinser and Third NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky raced wheel-to-wheel through turn two early in lap 22. Dollansky beat them down the back stretch, only to have the former series champions pass him deep in the third corner. Mark Kinser, the defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series and Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion, started inside the seventh row. He made a run toward the front during the final two laps, steering the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove in the first corner to get by Dollansky, then passed Swindell for third place deep in turn four. Mark passed cousin Steve deep in the second corner, only to have "The King of the Outlaws" return the favor with a high move out of turn four as they raced for the checkered flag. Lasoski was three car- lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he took the checkered flag. Swindell finished in fourth place, ahead of Dollansky, Saldana, First CHANNELLOCK Dash winner Andy Hillenburg, Blaney, Johnny Herrera and Stevie Smith. Haudenschild received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the 50-car qualifying session with a 15.171-second, 118.647-m.p.h., lap around the famous semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. <pre> 2000 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Amoco Night Knoxville Raceway, Knoxville, IA Saturday, April 29, Feature Program #12 Vivarin qualifications: 1.
