BLANEY CONTINUES HOT STREAK WITH VICTORY AT KINGS By Richard Day HANFORD, CA (September 7) - Dave Blaney has been chasing Steve Kinser in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings for the last two years. He has had "The King of the Outlaws" chasing him at Kings Speedway the last four years, however. "The Buckeye Bullet" won his second World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Kings Speedway since 1991 when a standing-room-only crowd packed Hanford's semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval Wednesday night. The $5,200 victory extended his West Coast hot streak that has included three victories in the series' last four events. "The #10 Vivarin J&J has really been running well lately," Blaney said. "(Crew chief) Kenny Woodruff has been doing a great job setting the car up." "The Buckeye Bullet" appeared to have the right setup throughout the World of Outlaws' 58th event of the year, qualifying second-quick, running third in the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race and finishing second in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 30-lap "A" Feature outside the front row. Jac Haudenschild, the Vivarin Dash winner, burst into the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the main event. He was two car-lengths ahead of Blaney and Kinser when Kings' new one-lap record holder, Kenny Jacobs, stopped on the front stretch early in the third lap. The ignition problems that had plagued him since time trials kept the #71M Ecowater Stealth from firing, putting him out of the race. Jacobs chopped .231 seconds off Sammy Swindell's four-year-old one-lap standard with a 13.452-second qualifying lap in time trials. The effort earned him his fourth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the season. Within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow, Greg Hodnett passed his Two Winners Racing teammate, Joe Gaerte, deep in the first corner for fourth place. Stevie Smith relegated Gaerte to sixth place the next time around. "The Wild Child" steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into lapped traffic with Blaney and Kinser close behind nine laps into the race. He slid out of the low groove in the fourth corner late in lap 10, however, allowing "The Buckeye Bullet" to execute the winning pass. "The King of the Outlaws" took the runner-up spot from Haudenschild deep in turn two early in the 11th lap, and started pressuring Blaney for the lead the next time around. Blaney raced through lapped traffic in the low groove for seven laps before steering the #10 into the high groove with 13 laps remaining. Entering turn three with a four-car-length lead late in the 18th lap, "The Buckeye Bullet" doubled his advantage as he took the high line out of the fourth corner. Smith and Hodnett passed "The Wild Child" during the 19th and 23rd laps, respectively, as Blaney extended his lead to a full straightaway. Stevie, winner of five of the 11 feature races the World of Outlaws ran in California last year, continued his run to the front of the field during a 27th-lap restart, passing Kinser for the runner-up spot deep in turn three. Jason Lund's collision with Paul McMahan sent him flipping down the front straightaway with two laps remaining. Steve Kent restarted between Blaney and Smith when the race resumed, allowing "The Buckeye Bullet" to out-distance Stevie by six car-lengths. "The track came to me tonight," Blaney said. "I was able to roll around the lapped traffic on the top." Kinser finished the main event in third place, ahead of Hodnett, Haudenschild, Jeff Swindell, Johnny Herrera, Andy Hillenburg, "B" Feature winner Sammy Swindell and Gaerte. Hillenburg, only the 21st-fastest qualifier in the 39-car field, drove his #2 STP J&J to victory in the Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race and passed 11 sprinters from his 10th-row starting position to finish eighth in the main event.
