Jeff Swindell To Substitute For Injured Brother Sammy In Channellock #1
MEADVILLE, PA - August 2, 2001 - Jeff Swindell, a seasoned World of Outlaws sprint car driver, will fill the shoes of his brother, three-time World of Outlaws series champion Sammy Swindell by driving the Channellock #1 Stealth while Sammy recovers from injuries sustained in a freak accident with a push truck at Lernerville Speedway on July 24th.
Sammy broke bones in both hands, fractured his kneecap and sustained contusions to his head and groin. His injuries are estimated to require four to six weeks to heal, though he has indicated a desire to compete at the Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway on August 8-11.
Jeff Swindell is no stranger to sprint car competition and the World of Outlaws series in particular. He began racing sprints in 1977. He joined the World of Outlaws in 1981, receiving Rookie of the Year honors in his first full season. He has recorded 12 top-ten World of Outlaws final points finishes and seven top-five seasons. His best World of Outlaws season was 1989, when he finished second in the final standings. He finished fourth in the standings in four separate years, and claimed 32 career "A" Feature victories before stepping back from competition following the 1999 season.
"We have a lot of important races coming up in the next few weeks. Jeff was a natural choice to fill in for me," said Sammy about the decision. "He has the experience. We're both pretty much the same size and build, so we won't have to make many changes to the overall set-up that we have designed for my body. Jeff didn't have any other racing obligations either, so I know he can focus on what we're doing without other distractions."
Commenting on the decision to place Jeff Swindell in Sammy's car during his recovery, Channellock's marketing manager, John Strizzi said, "Jeff Swindell is a proven sprint car driver and has established a strong following among fans of the World of Outlaws. We're very pleased that he was able to fill in for his brother Sammy during this crucial recovery period. Channellock, Inc. welcomes Jeff to our racing family and wishes him the best of luck in the coming weeks."
Jeff Swindell will begin his substitute driving responsibilities on Friday, August 3rd at Eldora Speedway for the running of the World of Outlaws-sanctioned "Night Before the Big One," followed by "The Big One," a non-World of Outlaws race that boasts a huge $100,000 purse for the winner.
