Swindell Wins Channellock Fall Classic Prelim By Richard Day GREENWOOD, NE (September 24) - Sammy Swindell sure knows how to please his sponsor. Swindell made Channellock officials happy Friday by driving his #1 Channellock Stealth into the lead early and leading all 20 laps in the Preliminary Feature as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the Channellock Fall Classic at NAPA I-80 Speedway. "The Channellock car was working good tonight," Sammy said after his third Preliminary Feature victory of the year. "Tomorrow we can just concentrate on our car and the track, and not have to worry about what kind of number we draw (for Vivarin qualifying). "We give 100% every time we pull the car out of the trailer, but to win tomorrow night (with Channellock as the title sponsor of the event) would be icing on the cake." A fatal crash involving #93 Amoco Maxim driver Kevin Gobrecht clouded the opening-night festivities (see related story). Swindell, the second-fastest of eight drivers eclipsing I-80's previous qualifying standard, won the Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He earned the right to start the 20-lap feature outside the front row by following Jac Haudenschild across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser lowered the single-lap record by more than a half-second, driving the #5M Mopar Maxim around the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval in 13.746 seconds, an average speed of 104.758 m.p.h. Kinser was rewarded for his record- breaking effort with his 27th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Swindell used a high move around Haudenschild to take the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. The three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion was 1.58 seconds ahead of "The Wild Child" when he entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap. A broken rear end in the #8H Energy Release Eagle forced Dale Blaney to stop in the fourth corner seconds later, bringing out the caution flag and taking the leaders out of lapped traffic. Andy Hillenburg coasted into the pits with brake problems, but restarted. Swindell raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, and caught the backmarkers again with a 1.07-second advantage within five laps. Danny Lasoski raced wheel-to-wheel with Swindell through turns three and four the next time around, but was unable to surge ahead. Steve Kinser, who won the July 4th "A" Feature at I-80, exchanged fourth place with Tim Shaffer twice during the first 10 laps. He steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep in the fourth corner to regain the position late in lap 12, but slid out of the low groove allowing Shaffer and Johnny Herrera to race past on the front straightaway. A mechanical malfunction caused Brooke Tatnell to stop in turn two three laps later. Gobrecht slid over the cushion in the first corner as the race resumed, and flipped. Matt Moro was unable to steer clear of the #93 as it sat upside down in the second corner. Paul McMahan passed Steve Kinser for sixth place as the green flag replaced the red, then took fifth place with a high move around Herrera in turn four. Hillenburg brought out the red flag when he flipped on the back straightaway late in the 17th lap. Haudenschild challenged Lasoski for second, while McMahan claimed the final automatic starting position in Saturday's Channellock Dash by passing Shaffer for fourth place as the race resumed. Swindell was .87 seconds ahead of "The Dude" when he took the checkered flag. "Lapped traffic was tough, depending on where you caught the cars," Sammy explained. "You had to try to keep your momentum up, and if you could roll around to other cars it was better than having to try to slide by them and scrub off speed. We changed a few things on that red flag, and some helped, but some hurt us too." Haudenschild finished in third place, ahead of McMahan, Shaffer, Herrera, Steve Kinser, Joey Saldana, Mark Kinser and 16th-starting Stevie Smith. Mark Kinser was racing for the lead in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race when he suffered a flat right rear tire. He won the "B" Feature after finishing eighth in the heat race. WoO
