Haudenschild Sweeps Cornhusker Outlaws Showdown By Richard Day GREENWOOD, NE (September 26) - Many of the Nebraska football fans who watched the Cornhuskers crush Washington filled I-80 Speedway Saturday as Jac Haudenschild dominated the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Inaugural Cornhusker Outlaws Showdown in similar fashion. Haudenschild, who led every lap in Friday's Preliminary Feature telecast on TNN: The Nashville Network, came back and led all 30 laps from the pole again as a record crowd gathered at the 4/10-mile oval. "The cautions went our way again tonight," Haudenschild said, "but I think we would have been a little better in traffic. The track was a lot wider tonight. "I've said all year long that my guys give me a great race car and they did it again tonight." Haudenschild earned the right to start the main event on the pole by winning his second Channellock Dash in as many nights. He leads the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series with 14 Channellock Dash victories. He and Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway and through the first corner before Haudenschild surged ahead in the low groove in turn two. Sammy Swindell, who passed 16 cars after losing his left rear tire early in Friday's Preliminary Feature, wasn't as fortune Saturday. He lost fourth place when he suffered a flat right rear tire in a collision with Don Droud, Jr., who flipped in the fourth corner late in the second lap. The defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion allowed his #1 Channellock Stealth to hit the berm deep in turn four and roll over nine laps later. Sammy eventually finished 20th and fell 85 points behind Kinser with 10 events remaining. Haudenschild raced away from the field as Danny Lasoski passed the Kinser cousins - Steve and Mark - with a low move through the first and second corners on the ensuing restart. Steve Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into turn three to pass Lasoski later in the third lap. Mark Kinser steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to the lowest point between the first and second corners to pass both Steve and "The Dude" to take the runner-up spot the next time around. Haudenschild was two seconds ahead of Mark when he entered lapped traffic eight laps into the race. He had a 1.1-second advantage when he caught the backmarkers again during lap 19. The leaders were approaching dense lapped traffic during the 20th lap when Tyler Walker and Donny Schatz - running eighth and ninth, respectively - flipped in turn four. Lasoski drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass Mark as the race resumed. Mark came back with a low move through turns three and four to reclaim second place late in lap 21. Haudenschild was racing through the fourth corner when he allowed the #22 Pennzoil Maxim to jump the cushion and clip the retaining wall late in the final lap. He recovered quickly and took the checkered flag with five car-lengths to spare. The $10,000 victory was his 11th of the season. "I let off a little on that last lap and tried following one of the lapped cars through there," Jac said. "It caught me by surprise and took me up into the wall. "I want to thank Brad Doty. Brad was on the radio talking to me all race long. He was talking to me at Chico (during the Gold Cup Race of Champions), too. I guess you could say he's my coach now." Steve Kinser passed Lasoski during the final lap to finish third. Completing the top 10 in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 58th "A" Feature of the year were Jeff Swindell, Dale Blaney, Third Racing Champions Heat Race winner Stevie Smith, Andy Hillenburg, 19th- starting Travis Cram and Johnny Herrera. Travis Whitney won the "B" Feature, then raced into 11th place from outside the 11th row. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will sanction the 36th Annual Williams Grove National Open Friday and Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA.
