Haudenschild Takes Cornhusker Outlaws Showdown Prelim By Richard Day GREENWOOD, NE (September 25) - Although a shoulder injury took him out of the best points race in Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' history, Jac Haudenschild is enjoying the best year of his career. Haudenschild was unbeatable Friday when TNN: The Nashville Network televised the preliminary program live from the Inaugural Cornhusker Outlaws Showdown at I-80 Speedway. "The crew has the car working really well," Haudenschild said following his fourth Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "I just want to thank Jack Elden for giving me such good equipment." He led all 30 laps in the feature, but Haudenschild's best move came before the evening's main event. Jac earned the right to start the feature on the pole by executing a daring, fourth-corner pass of Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser as they headed for the checkered flag in the Channellock Dash. Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature, but a collision involving Stevie Smith and Dale Blaney caused Don Droud, Jr., to stop against the wall in the fourth corner. Jac controlled the ensuing restart as Sammy Swindell challenged Tyler Walker for fourth place. Haudenschild opened a .8-second lead within seven laps, but Kinser narrowed the gap as they entered lapped traffic two laps later. A series of cautions sent Johnny Herrera, Kerry Madsen, Donny Schatz, Jaymie Moyle and Smith to the rear of the 24-car field before another subplot unfolded. Swindell's #1 Channellock Stealth lost its left rear wheel and collided with Third Racing Champions Heat Race winner Mark Kinser during the 13th-lap restart. The defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion, faced with the possibility of falling farther behind Steve Kinser in the standings, showed intense determination during the final 15 laps. Swindell to start his run to the front after several more cautions involving Tim Shaffer, Andy Hillenburg and Schatz during the race's middle stages. He passed 14 cars in seven laps and was in eighth place with six laps remaining. After Sammy maneuvered arounnd Paul McMahan and Dale Blaney, Craig Dollansky's flat right rear tire brought out the final caution and set up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. As Kinser tried to keep pace with Haudenschild, Swindell caught Mark Kinser and passed him with an inside move in the first corner early in the final lap to claim fifth place. Haudenschild was .8 seconds ahead of "The King of the Outlaws" when he took the checkered flag. "The track was kind of tough tonight," Jac said. "It was pretty hard to pass. The cautions definitely helped us because the lapped cars were running the same groove we were. "We knew Steve was going to be tough. We're just glad to win one for Pennzoil. We just want to come back tomorrow and get another one." Swindell, who followed Haudenschild, Kinser, Danny Lasoski and Walker across the finish line, was happy with his fifth-place finish. "The guys did a great job getting things back together," Sammy said. "It was unfortunate to have that problem. Aside from that, the car was great. I was biding my time. The track opened up a little bit and gave me some room to get around some guys on the outside and out- brake them in the corner." "The King of the Outlaws" was content to finish second. "We'd have liked to won this one, but we really gave it away in the dash," Kinser said. "The track started laying some rubber on the bottom and Jac found it before I did. Sometimes it's better to be in second in a situation like that." Mark Kinser finished sixth, ahead of Blaney, McMahan, Leonard Lee and 21st-starting Joe Gaerte. Sammy received his 11th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 15.129-second lap around the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval. Sammy was chosen the Mopar High Performer of the Event for his effort in the feature. His brother, Jeff, received the other made-for- television honor, and was featured on TNN's Maalox Minute. Jeff had the #104+ Octane Boost J&J in the wrong place at the wrong time when Travis Cram and Lee collided early in the First Racing Champions Heat Race. Jeff collided with Cram and flipped violently, forcing the Two Winners crew to bring out a backup car. Jeff won the "C" Feature from the seventh row, but his ninth-place finish in the "B" left him to watch the Preliminary Feature from the pit area. Dollansky looked strong in his new #7 Midwest Underground/Polydome sprinter, qualifying 10th and running eighth in the main event, until a flat tire victimized him with less than two laps remaining.
