Smith Wins I-55 Feature as Kinser Crashes By Richard Day PEVELY, MO (July 25) - In the 20 years the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has been thrilling fans across the country, few races have been as bizarre as Saturday's at I-55 Raceway. Mark Kinser appeared to be on his way to lapping the field en route to his second straight victory when he allowed the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to hit the retaining wall and flip in the second corner with a little more than 2 1/2 laps remaining. Stevie Smith, who was more than half a lap behind when the crash occurred, restarted at the front of the field and held off Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser to claim his 10th "A" Feature victory of the year. "We had one given to us tonight," Smith admitted, "but we've given them away before, too. I'm just glad to put the Ingersoll- Rand car in victory lane." Mark, the third-fastest qualifier in the 31-car field, earned the right to start the 40-lap main event on the pole by winning the Channellock Dash from outside the second row. Kinser burst into the lead as the green flag fell and immediately started building a comfortable advantage. Smith passed Garry Brazier for second place with a low move through turns one and two early in the opening lap. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Danny Lasoski steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove in the second corner to pass Brazier for third the next time around. Mark was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. His advantage disintegrated four laps later, however, when Brooke Tatnell took his #7K Racing Eclipse sprinter for a spin in turn two. Kinser raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, and was eight car-lengths ahead of Smith when he caught the backmarkers again within three laps. Stevie narrowed the gap to four car-lengths in dense traffic two laps later, only to have Kinser open a 10-car-length advantage by lap 16. Mark was a full straightaway ahead of Smith midway through the race, and extended his lead with a couple of daring moves in lapped traffic two laps later. After threading the #5M between Jerrod Hull and Todd Rowland in turn four, Mark put a quick slide move on Johnny Herrera in the first corner. He lapped all but eight cars in the field by the 25th lap. Kinser, winner of two World of Outlaws "A" Features at I-55, increased his lead to half a lap as Sammy Swindell and Tyler Walker battled for sixth place the next time around. Sammy was challenging the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Manufacturers' Rookie of the Year candidate when the #35 Air Sep Eagle jumped the cushion in turn four, allowing Swindell to pass him. Mark held a comfortable three-quarters-of-a-lap advantage with 10 laps remaining. Steve Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the third corner to pass Smith the next time around, only to have Stevie return the favor as he slid out of the low groove in turn four. "The King of the Outlaws" passed Stevie in the low groove in turn three again four laps later, but Smith regained the position when Steve jumped the cushion in the fourth corner. Kinser lapped the sixth-place car with four laps remaining, only to have disaster strike the next time around. Mark, running the high groove in turn two, slid over the cushion and hit the outside retaining wall. The impact caused the #5M to flip, which broke the front axle. His crew repaired the car quickly and Mark restarted seventh while Smith inherited the lead. Smith controlled the ensuing restart, but Steve Kinser caught him early in the final lap. They raced wheel-to-wheel through the fourth corner, but Stevie was 2 1/2 car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag. "Traffic was pretty interesting because I could only run the top," Smith explained. "Steve and I went at it there for a few laps, but of course, there was way to tell if that was going to be for the lead." Jac Haudenschild finished third, ahead of Lasoski, Swindell, Herrera, Mark Kinser, Gary Wright, Walker and 19th-starting Kelly Kinser. Lasoski received his sixth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session with an 11.061 second, 108.489 m.p.h., lap around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval. His fourth-place run, coupled with Andy Hillenburg's 12th-place finish, pushed him into fifth place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings.
