Outlaws Kick Off I-55's Season on March 30th!
PEVELY, MO (February 27, 2002) The Pennzoil World of Outlaw Series kicks off the season for I-55 Raceway for the second straight year. Despite very cold temperatures last year, the season opener was jam packed with fans that were anxious for another season of great racing at the I-55 Raceway.
"This is a racy track. We can go three and four wide here and do a lot of passing. I'm kind of partial to this place," said Missourian Danny Lasoski, the defending Pennzoil World of Outlaw Champion.
Lasoski, of Dover, Mo., has never won a World of Outlaws feature at I-55, but he has won sprint car races at Pevely on other occasions. The most recent came at the track's annual "Open Wheel Wednesday" event on June 7, 2000.
Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell are the all-time WoO champions at I-55 Raceway with three victories each. Doug Wolfgang and Mark Kinser are two-time winners at Pevely.
The all-time track record at I-55 Raceway is held by Swindell, who turned a lap at 10.535 seconds on the one-third mile oval in 1997. That works out to 113.906 m.p.h.
The UMP Modifieds will also be competing, with a $1000 payday on the line for the winner. Defending two-time track champion Scott Weber will be there to open his title defense along with many other great modified drivers from throughout the Midwest. NASCAR veteran Kenny Schrader will also be on hand competing in a UMP Modified. Schrader, who is the co-promoter of I-55 Raceway, is excited about the 2002 season at I-55 and expects it to be bigger and better than ever.
Many improvements have been made to I-55 Raceway over the winter, including over 100 loads of new dirt on the racing surface, additional lighting in the corners, additional grandstands and much more.
Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. and racing begins at 6:00 p.m. Reserved seats are $32 and general admission tickets are $30. Children 12 and under will be admitted free for seating in the general admission areas.
I-55 Raceway, a high-banked, one-third-mile clay oval, is located 20 minutes south of Interstate 270 at Pevely exits 178 or 180. For tickets or more information, call the track at (636) 479-3219 or the track off-season number (573) 756-2593 or surf the web to www.i55raceway.com. Track office will be open on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning March 6th.
