Smith Wins, 'King' Takes Points Lead at Huset's By Richard Day BRANDON, SD (July 7) - Stevie Smith extended his advantage in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series victory column while Steve Kinser took the lead in the series' 20th anniversary championship battle Tuesday at Huset's Speedway. Smith steered his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the high groove between turns three and four late in the fourth lap to pass Andy Hillenburg, then held off hard-charging Danny Lasoski to claim his eighth "A" Feature victory of the year. "We caught some breaks in traffic tonight," Smith said. "It seems like the races here always come down to traffic. We got pretty close to a couple of cars, but we didn't hit anyone. "Ingersoll-Rand is a great sponsor. It all goes back to my crew guys. They give me a great car that I can run anywhere." Kinser, the series' 14-time champion, was nine points behind cousin Mark when the World of Outlaws opened its 34th event of the season. He drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into third place from inside the fifth row while Mark was unable to finish for the second straight event. Defending series champion Sammy Swindell and Smith also passed Mark, who received credit for 22nd place after dropping out during the 19th lap with an ignition problem. Smith, the second-fastest qualifier in the 36-car field, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event inside the third row by following Andy Hillenburg, Greg Hodnett, Mark and Swindell across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Hillenburg started on the pole for the sixth time this year, and drove his #2 J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Smith passed Mark and Sammy during the opening lap, then used a high move between the third and fourth corners to pass Hodnett for second place late in lap two. Smith caught Hillenburg two laps later and took the lead with another high move through turns three and four. Mark, winner of four World of Outlaws main events at Huset's, followed Stevie into lapped traffic after passing Hillenburg high in the second corner the next time around. Hillenburg regained second place late in lap six, only to have Mark return the favor with a low move through turns three and four following a seventh-lap caution period. Lasoski, a former Huset's Speedway track champion, started inside the fourth row. He passed three cars during the first 10 laps, then drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle under Hillenburg in turn three late in the 13th lap. Hillenburg was challenging "The Dude" for third place midway through the race when he stopped on the front straightaway with a packed right rear wheel. The yellow flag was flying again four laps later when Dennis Moore, Jr., jumped the cushion in the fourth corner and hit the retaining wall. Mark Kinser stopped on the back stretch during the caution period when the magneto in the #5M Wirtgen Maxim malfunctioned. Tyler Walker was trying to steer the #35 Air Sep Eagle around fellow Rookie of the Year candidate Dale Blaney in turn four late in the 21st lap. They collided, and Walker flipped down the front stretch. Walker lost seventh place but was uninjured in the crash. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Jac Haudenschild passed Blaney for sixth place with an inside move between the third and fourth corners two laps after the green flag replaced the red. Smith was only .7 seconds ahead of Lasoski before a daring move around Justin Henderson with seven laps remaining added a full second to his advantage. Haudenschild claimed his ninth straight top-five finish by steering the #22 Pennzoil Maxim around Swindell in turn four as they headed for the checkered flag. Smith was 2.4 seconds ahead of "The Dude" when he took the checkered flag to claim the $10,000 first prize. "We had some problems when we were leading the points, but that can happen when the competition is as tough as it is now," Stevie said after winning the 42nd "A" Feature of his career. "There's still a lot of racing left this year. Hopefully, we'll still be close enough when it comes down to end of the season." Hodnett followed Smith, Lasoski and "The King of the Outlaws" across the finish line for his best finish of the year. Completing the top 10 in the main event were Haudenschild, Swindell, Blaney, Second Racing Champions Heat Race winner Terry McCarl, Johnny Herrera and "B" Feature winner Jeff Swindell. Haudenschild received his seventh Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 10.971-second, 12.052-m.p.h. lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval.
