Huset's Victory Pushes Sammy Close to Points Lead By Richard Day SIOUX FALLS, SD (April 27) - Although he didn't take the lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings, a daring move Sammy Swindell executed at Huset's Speedway Sunday could go a long way toward determining the series' 1997 champion. In one of the most unbelievable chain of events in World of Outlaws history, Jac Haudenschild, Andy Hillenburg and Swindell exchanged the lead in the middle stages of Sunday's "A" Feature three times within a matter of seconds. "The Wild Child" led the first 14 laps from the pole and was on the verge of crossing the finish line to lead lap 15 when Hillenburg passed him. A split-second later, Swindell passed both heading into the first corner. Despite a late charge by Steve and Mark Kinser that produced a photo finish, Sammy won his fifth "A" Feature of the year. The fifth victory of his World of Outlaws career at Huset's pushed Swindell to within five points of the lead in the drivers' standings. Sammy had plenty to say about the winning pass. "It was just a deal where Haud (Haudenschild) was up there (in the high groove) and Andy was working him on the bottom," Swindell explained. "I was just watching what was going on. Haud was trying to keep Andy pretty low. Haud missed the rubber on the race track, so I thought I could get by him pretty easily because I knew he couldn't hold the line. Then Andy pushed really bad getting off the corner. I didn't know it was going to work out, but I saw that hole open up and I just gassed it." Swindell "gassed it" around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval throughout the final 15 laps as the Kinser cousins battled for the runner-up spot. Mark caught Sammy in turn four as they headed for the white flag. Seconds later, Steve caught them in the first corner and raced wheel-to-wheel with Mark down the back stretch, bringing the capacity crowd to its feet. Swindell's #1 Channellock Gambler was only a car-length ahead of Steve as he took the checkered flag. The Goodyear tires on Steve's #11 Quaker State Maxim were all that beat Mark across the finish line. Sammy opened the festivities by setting Huset's single-lap record. His 10.745-second qualifying lap sliced .120 seconds off the standard Mark set last July 3rd. The effort earned Swindell his second Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year. Picking the #4 inversion pill put Sammy outside the second row and Haudenschild on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. "The Wild Child" won the seven-lap race for the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole. Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and entered lapped traffic seven laps later. The caution flag was flying the next time around as Joey Saldana spun in turn one and Garry Brazier went for a spin in the second corner. The ensuing restart saw the Kinser cousins' family feud begin. Steve took the low line through turns three and four to take over fourth place. Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J next to Haudenschild down the back straightaway during the 10th lap, and Sammy caught them two laps later. Andy battled "The Wild Child" for the lead for three more laps before passing him for first place at the finish line. Hillenburg's stint as the leader was short-lived, however, as Swindell pulled off the winning pass in turn one. Seconds later, Andy collided with Steve Kinser and crashed into the wall. Two laps later, the caution flag was flying again as a collision involving Jeff Swindell and Todd Wessels broke the left front drag link on the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim, putting Jeff out of the race. Mark started making his way toward the front after the green flag replaced the yellow, passing "The King of the Outlaws" and Haudenschild during the 20th and 21st laps. Steve, Greg Hodnett and Dave Blaney relegated "The Wild Child" to sixth by lap 26. Although Swindell handled lapped traffic with ease, he was never able to build a comfortable advantage. His $7,000 victory was in doubt until he took the checkered flag. "We got pretty lucky in traffic," Sammy said. "A lot of cars changed lines just as I got there, and I was able to get by pretty easily. "I knew Mark and Steve were back there," he added. "I knew they'd be racing with each other, too." Following Swindell and the Kinser cousins under the checkered flag were Hodnett, Blaney, Danny Lasoski, Haudenschild, First Heat Race winner Stevie Smith, Donny Schatz and Joe Gaerte. Next on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' schedule is a $75,000 event at I-80 Speedway Thursday and Friday (May 1-2).
