Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Huset's Speedway
Two names come to mind when the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series visits Huset's Speedway and those are Terry McCarl and Danny Lasoski. McCarl is the winningest driver in the history of the track with 77 triumphs, including one with the World of Outlaws in 2006, while Lasoski is second on the list with 38 victories. McCarl is a six-time track champion at the high-banked 3/8-mile, while Lasoski has three titles to his credit. McCarl also holds the track record in time trials, which he established in 2002.
Last season, McCarl finished third at Huset's Speedway with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, after leading a number of laps early in the race. In his last six starts at the track dating back to 2005, he has finished third or better in each, with three wins. The native of Altoona, Iowa is currently sixth in championship points this season with the series, on the strength of three Top-10 finishes.
Donny Schatz, the two-time defending Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion was victorious last season at Huset's Speedway for the second time in his career. He is currently third in points, with six Top-10 finishes, including four runner-up performances.
Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion is the current active leader in wins with the series at the track with six A-Feature triumphs. He most recently won at Huset's Speedway in 2003.
Craig Dollansky, who is the current World of Outlaws championship point leader has four career wins at Huset's Speedway, including one with the World of Outlaws Gumout Series in 2000. He finished second last season at the track.
Jason Meyers, who leads the World of Outlaws with three A-Feature wins this season and is second in points, has one career win at the track, with that coming in a weekly event at Huset's Speedway in 2001.
Jac Haudenschild has six career wins at Huset's Speedway, with five of those coming in 1991, when he was behind the wheel of the No. 5 for Forbrook Motorsports. He also won the $20,000 Gold Cup at the track in 1999.
Huset's Speedway has been an integral stop on the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series for well over 20 years. This season, the 3/8-mile facility just outside of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, will see the series make three separate visits to the track for three full nights of racing. Dating back to 1983, 10 drivers have earned wins at the track with the series, led by two-time series champion Mark Kinser, who picked up nine A-Feature wins.
2007 Race Recap: Donny Schatz won his second career World of Outlaws A-Feature event at the always racy 3/8-mile, which helped him remain undefeated in the state of South Dakota in 2007.
The race began with a false start that moved Terry McCarl to the outside of the front row beside Schatz. A second start was negated by an accident. On the third state, Schatz led into turn one on the low side of the track, with McCarl running high and taking the lead entering the third turn on the opening circuit and officially being scored the leader.
The six-time track champion would lead the first six laps, before Schatz would catch him in heavy lapped traffic. On the seventh lap, Schatz dove low in turn three to take the lead, which he would not relinquish the rest of the way. During the first 10 laps of the race, McCarl closed on Schatz and looked under him a couple of times, but could not make a pass.
Craig Dollansky took the second spot from McCarl on the 13th lap and made several runs at Schatz, including on the 18th lap when the pair ran side-by-side down the back straightaway. A late caution and then a red flag gave Dollansky a couple of chances to get a run on Schatz. He got several runs on Schatz on the high side of the track during the last five laps of the event, but each time the defending series champion fended him off and retained the lead.
Dollansky would finish second, with McCarl in third. Kerry Madsen came home fourth with Jac Haudenschild rounding out the Top-Five.
