SELMA, CA (November 26) -- With so many Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series teams changing since the racing season ended, David Helm had several racers to choose from after Tim Shaffer left his Vivarin team to drive Dennis Roth' s #83 Beef Packers Eagle. Helm, who finished seventh in the car owner point standings in 2001, announced he hired Stevie Smith Monday. Smith, who drove his own #19 Ingersoll-Rand Maxim the past two years, finished eighth in owner points and ninth in the car owner standings last season. "Stevie and I are going to race together next year and talk about staying together after that," Helm said. "If we have a really good year, it will continue. There are a lot of guys out there, so it was a tough decision. We narrowed it down to a couple and made the decision. I made the decision based on how Stevie has raced in recent years." Smith, the 1990 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year, has finished in the top 10 in the point standings 12 straight seasons, including a runner-up run in 1992. He ranks sixth in career "A" Feature victories with 63. "Sonny Kratzer will continue as our crew chief," Helm said. "Stevie's dad, Steve, will stay at home at the shop (in New Oxford, PA) and work there. We're keeping our same crew. Steve Swenson has been with us a couple of years and Justin Krull has been with us for one year. "I think we're going to have a really good team for Vivarin next year. We have good (Garrett) motors and the (Maxim) car is running well. We have a good driver and a good mechanic, so we think we have the right combination. Things should go really well for us." Helm added that Goody's headache powder will be an associate sponsor for his team in 2002.
