Kinser Overcomes Flu to Win Beertown Showdown By Richard Day HALES CORNERS, WI (June 9) - Feed a fever; starve a cold. Mark Kinser, racing with a bad case of the flue, ignored those instructions Wednesday and still won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Eighth Annual Beertown Showdown at Hales Corners Speedway. "We've been passing the flu back and forth here lately," Mark said. "My wife, Cindy, had it, then my little boy, Cole, had it really bad, and now I have it. "The Mopar car was great. The driver was only about 30 percent tonight, but we got it done." Kinser has been "getting it done" more often than anybody else in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series this season. He has won 10 times while racing into the top five in 24 of 30 "A" Features. He is 170 points ahead of second-place Danny Lasoski in the point standings. Mark chopped .228 seconds off the single-lap record Joey Allen set on August 19, 1992, with a 12.810-second lap around the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval in time trials. He was rewarded with his 15th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Kinser won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, then earned the right to start the "A" Feature outside the second row by following Daryn Pittman, Andy Hillenburg and Stevie Smith across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Pittman, who won his second straight Channellock Dash, drove the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Travis Whitney, who started inside the third row, exchanged third place with Hillenburg during the first two laps before Kinser passed him for fourth late in the third lap. Smith, who won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, chased Pittman for 9 1/2 laps before taking the lead with a low move on the back straightaway. Pittman was trying to catch Smith when he spun into Hillenburg in the first corner and turned over. Neither Pittman nor Hillenburg was able to restart. Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove in turn one to pass Smith for the lead as the race resumed. Tyler Walker, who started outside the fifth row, used an outside move in second corner to pass Lance Blevins for third place late in the 12th lap. He kept the #35 Air Sep Maxim in the high groove and passed Smith for the runner-up spot on the back stretch one lap later. Stevie surrendered third place early in lap 17 when a flat right rear tire forced him to stop his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit on the front stretch. Lasoski, who followed Walker through the field, passed Blevins and Donny Schatz during the 19th lap to take over third place. Kinser was eight car-lengths ahead of Walker when he entered lapped traffic four laps later. A caution for Frankie Kerr, who stopped on the front straightaway with a broke radius rod, tightened the field the next time around. A broken rear end on the #7K Kele & Associates J&J caused "B" Feature winner Brooke Tatnell to stop in the third corner with three laps remaining. Lasoski tried to pass Walker for second place in turn one as the white flew. He was still trying to pass Walker when their third-corner collision caused the #83 Beef Packers Eagle to turn over. Kinser took the checkered flag before the red flag fell, sealing the $10,000 victory. "The Dude" had to settle for 17th place. "On any other night, the traffic wouldn't have bothered me, but tonight I didn't want any part of it," Mark said. "The cautions really helped me get my breath back." Blevins tied his best career finish in a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature by finishing in third place. Schatz finished fourth, ahead of Sammy Swindell, Jeff Swindell, Whitney, 23rd-starting Johnny Herrera, Joey Saldana and Steve Kinser. Whitney's seventh-place finish was the best of his career. Joe Gaerte told car owner Junior Holbrook the Beertown Showdown would be his last race as the driver of the #8H Energy Release Eagle. The 1989 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year qualified fifth-quick, ran third in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and finished 11th in the "A" Feature. WoO
