KINSER WINS HALES CORNERS' BEER TOWN SHOWDOWN By Richard Day HALES CORNER, WI (June 21) - Steve Kinser passed cousin Mark Kinser late in the 18th lap and cruised to victory in the World of Outlaws' Sixth Annual Beer Town Showdown, run before a capacity crowd at Hales Corners Speedway Wednesday. The $12,000 victory, Kinser's seventh in 21 starts this season, was his ninth in the 12 events the Skoal Outlaw Series has run at Hales Corners' semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval. Kinser, the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 43-car field, earned the right to start the 40-lap "A" Feature outside the front row by following Mark across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Mark burst into the lead and Dave Blaney relegated Steve to third place with a second corner pass early in the opening lap. Keeping the #5M Wirtgen Maxim in the low groove, Mark opened a six-car-length advantage within two laps, and entered lapped traffic with "The Buckeye Bullet" challenging him for the lead seven laps into the race. Steve Kent, who traveled all the way from Fresno, CA, for the Beer Town Showdown, brought out the caution flag early in the eighth lap when he stopped the #11K Selma Shell Gambler on the front straightaway with a broken front end. Kinser attempted to race around Blaney in the high groove in turn three on the ensuing restart, but was unable to complete the pass. Kinser kept his #11 Quaker State Maxim in the high groove, and regained second place by out-dragging Blaney down the front straightaway early in the 10th lap. Noticing how fast Kinser was in the high groove, Stevie Smith steered the #71M Ecowater Systems Maxim to rim to take over fifth place during lap 12. Steve caught Mark two laps later, and challenged him for four laps before taking the high road into the lead in the third corner. Mark and "The Buckeye Bullet" followed Kinser into the high groove midway through the race and battled for second place in every corner during the final 20 laps. Kinser quickly put a half-straightaway between himself and his closest pursuers, and maintained that margin until a blown radiator hose in the #2 STP J&J forced defending Beer Town Showdown champion Andy Hillenburg to stop in turn two with seven laps remaining. Blaney threaded the #10 Vivarin J&J between Mark and the infield in the second corner to take over the runner-up spot on the ensuing restart. He was racing through turn four when Kinser took the checkered flag five laps later. "I was sliding around the bottom like everybody else early in the race," Kinser admitted in victory lane, "so I thought I would move up to the top. When I did, I started gaining some ground. Fortunately, I moved up to the top when I did." Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature Jeff Swindell, Danny Lasoski, fast-qualifier Jac Haudenschild, Smith, Johnny Herrera, 16th- starting Joe Gaerte and Greg Hodnett. Swindell's fourth-place run pushed him past Hillenburg into fifth place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. "The Wild Child," earned his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year by circling the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval in 13.683 seconds. Herrera received his first Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing into eighth place from his eighth-row starting position. Tom Musgrave, the younger brother of NASCAR Winston Cup racer Ted Musgrave, started the main event on the 10th row and finished 20th.
