Shepard Wins Pete Jacobs Memorial
By Kendra Jacobs ORRVILLE,OH (May 20)-Jeff Shepard picked up his first win of the 2000 Gumout Racing season at Wayne County Speedway Saturday night. In doing so, Shepard also extended his lead over Gumout Racing Series competitor Paul McMahan.

Shepard fought his way past early race leader, Randy Kinser, to earn the $5000 paycheck. "It feels great to finally win a second race, " Shepard stated in victory lane. "I've never won anything like a championship before in a sprint car. So, we're going to give it the best effort we can and hopefully we'll win it [point championship]."

Kinser and Shepard each won a Weld Wheels dash to put them on the front row of the Gumout Racing Series "A" Main event. Kinser jumped out in the lead, followed by Shepard, Brad Furr, Craig Dollansky, and Paul McMahan.

By lap six the top five were approaching lapped traffic. Shepard quickly closed in
on the leader. As Kinser went high, Shepard dove low to take the lead.

Lap seven brought out the first yellow for the #4 of Ricky Logan. Logan's motor had lost power and failed to restart. Thus earning him the Frankland Hard Luck Award for the evening.

At the restart, it was Shepard, R.Kinser, Furr, Dollansky, and Kelly Kinser. K.Kinser quickly swept past McMahan. The two continued to battle for fifth position.

The first red flag of the night was dropped on lap 13. The #47 of Marty Ling and the #8 of Scott Young tangled in turn four. Ling was out for the night, as Young restarted.

At the restart, Furr drove high into turn three allowing both Dollansky and K.Kinser to speed by. Donnie Kreitz drove by McMahan. Jason Meyers moved into the 10th position after starting 17th.

Shepard had created a sizeable lead by lap 20. Dollansky passed the Kinser Racing #14 and begins his drive toward the leader.

Lap 25 saw a horrific event as Frankie Kerr's sprinter catches on fire in turn two. Kerr struggles to evacuate the burning sprinter as Brian Ellenberger and Chad Kemenah run to his aid. Kerr escaped the accident with minor burns to both his hands and legs.

Randy Kinser tried a daring move low on Dollanksy to no avail. Kreitz, running in sixth position succumbed to a blown motor on lap 27. Not aware of the cautionary conditions, Furr drove over the wheel of Kelly Kinser and launched himself into the turn three fence. Furr walked away unharmed.

Shepard stayed strong and defeated the competition. Dollansky came home second, followed by R.Kinser, K.Kinser, and 13th starting Jimmy Hawley. McMahan finished in sixth. Seventeenth starting Jason Meyers charged his way into a seventh place finish, earning the KSE Hard Charger Award. Ronald Laney, Greg Wilson, and John Ivy rounded out the top 10 of the night.
