McMahan Wins Again
By Kendra Jacobs
GRANITE CITY, IL (Sept. 16)-Paul McMahan is showing how determination pays off. While the odds against the United Expressline team continued to build-up, the team was only waiting for their chance to fight back. Winning three Gumout Racing Series events in three weeks of racing, McMahan has proven the talent and skill that backs the Warren Johnson owned #U2.
McMahan did not take the initial lead of the 30-lap feature event. As the green dropped, rookie Brad Furr jumped out into the lead with Dollansky filing into second position. Before the lap was completed, the yellow came out due to a collision on the front stretch between Wayne Sternbergh and Babe Rowland. McMahan took advantage of the restart with Dollansky, Furr, and Shane Stewart following. Brent Antill got around Jimmy Carter on lap two to move into the top five. Ronald Laney made a charge two laps later to take fifth away from Antill.
Stewart, running in fourth position, slowly rolled over in turn two on lap five. Needing only a new top wing, Stewart was able to restart. Five laps later, Stewart had already worked hi way into ninth position.
On lap 11, Jeff Shepard had worked his way into the top five by passing Antill in turn one. Jason Meyers followed suit, pushing Antill back to seventh position. Stewart continued his charge to the front as he passed both Antill and Meyers, moving himself into the sixth position.
Dollansky worked his way onto McMahan's tail to battle for the lead. In doing so, Dollansky tangled with the lapped car of Tim Engler on lap 21. Dollansky was able to restart the race in ninth position. At the restart it was McMahan, followed by Furr, Laney, Shepard, and Stewart. Stewart was able to pass Shepard coming out of turn two to take over the fourth position. The following lap brought out a pile-up in turn one. Four cars were involved, including Jeff Mitrisin, Laney, Shepard, and Dollansky. Shepard was the only car able to restart the event.
With Laney's misfortune, Stewart restarted the event in 3rd position. On lap 26, Stewart passed Furr on the backstretch, but couldn't hold on as Furr got back around the #9H in turn four.
McMahan took home the $5,000 prize a complete straightaway ahead of Furr, Stewart, Meyers, and rookie Blake Feese.
Jeff Shepard earned the Huggins Fast Qualifier Award with a time of 16.327. Craig Dollansky was awarded the Frankland Hard Luck Award after his involvement in two separate accidents. Jason Meyers earned his ninth KSE Hard Charger Award for his charge from 13th to 4th.
The Gumout Racing Series will next compete at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas on Tuesday, September 19th.
