Swindell Nears Perfection in Grays Harbor Opener By Richard Day ELMA, WA (August 22) - Sammy Swindell is still trying to put the disappointment of crashing out of the lead in the Amoco Knoxville Nationals behind him. A few more performances like the one he put together in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' preliminary program at Grays Harbor Raceway Park Friday could make the Nationals just a faint memory as Sammy races toward his third series championship. Swindell, the leader in the World of Outlaws driver rankings, was almost perfect Friday, setting Grays Harbor's qualifying record, winning the First Heat Race and leading all 25 laps in the Preliminary Feature. Finishing second behind Steve Kinser in the Vivarin Dash was the only blemish on Swindell's performance. Sammy's 13.553-second qualifying lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval was the fastest of five drivers breaking the one- lap standard Joe Gaerte set last August 24th. The effort earned Swindell his eighth Channellock Quick-Time Award of the year. Kinser won the Vivarin Dash from the pole for the right to start the 25-lap Preliminary Feature inside the front row. Sammy passed Jac Haudenschild and Mark Kinser to receive the other front-row starting position. Swindell drove his #1 Channellock Gambler around Steve high in turn four as the green flag fell in the feature. Greg Hodnett and Donny Schatz raced past Dave Blaney as he allowed his #10 Vivarin J&J to pull a wheelstand early in the opening lap. "The Buckeye Bullet," who less than a week before won the Amoco Knoxville Nationals, passed Schatz during the second lap and took the low line through turn four to pass Hodnett for fifth place two laps later. Swindell was 15 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Kinser narrowed the gap to six car-lengths two laps later as Swindell slowed behind a pack of backmarkers. A first-corner collision involving Travis Cram, Dale Smith and Marc Huson brought out the caution flag early in lap 12. Two lapped cars restarting between the leaders allowed Swindell to start rebuilding his advantage immediately. "The Buckeye Bullet" continued his run toward the front early in lap 13, taking the low line into turn two to pass Mark Kinser for third place. Schatz had problems negotiating the fourth corner seconds later, allowing 17th-starting Jeff Swindell and "B" Feature winner Craig Dollansky to pass him. The 14th lap proved unlucky for Andy Hillenburg. He surrendered eighth place when the engine in his #2 STP J&J lost power, causing him to stop in turn two. Swindell raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, and entered lapped traffic with a 10-car-length advantage four laps later. "The King of the Outlaws" narrowed the gap as Mark Kinser battled Haudenschild for fourth place in dense lapped traffic the next time around. A steering malfunction in the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim caused Johnny Herrera to hit the retaining wall between the first and second corners with five laps remaining. Mark and "The Wild Child" raced wheel-to-wheel on the front straightaway as the race resumed, with Haudenschild surging ahead in turn one to maintain fourth place. The leaders caught the backmarkers again as the white flag fell. Jeff Swindell took the out of lapped traffic seconds later, however, as a malfunction in the front suspension on the #7TW Gold Eagle J&J forced him to stop in the fourth corner. Randy Hannagan suffered a flat right rear tire during the caution, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Sammy set the pace while the battle for the final automatic qualifying position in Saturday's Vivarin Dash raged. Mark raced past Haudenschild deep in the first corner, only to have "The Wild Child" take the high line into turn four to regain fourth place. Swindell was six car-lengths ahead of Kinser when he took the checkered flag. Hodnett finished in sixth place, ahead of 12th-starting Stevie Smith, Dollansky, Paul McMahan and Schatz.
