'WILD CHILD' OUTLASTS KINSER TO WIN GRANDVIEW EVENT By Richard Day BECHTELSVILLE, PA (May 30) - Sometimes cautions help, and sometimes they hinder. A couple of late ones took Jac Haudenschild out of lapped traffic and helped him into victory lane Tuesday night at Grandview Speedway. "The Wild Child" was racing among the backmarkers with Steve Kinser challenging him for the lead when Rick Koenig's front-straightaway spin sent the yellow flag flying, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. While Kinser managed to keep pace with Haudenschild, he couldn't execute the winning pass, crossing the finish line one car-length behind the #22 Pennzoil Maxim. "Dennis (Kohler, his crew chief) and the guys did a great job," Haudenschild said in victory lane. "The car was easy to drive. It was hairy in lapped traffic, so I didn't mind the caution." Kinser, a two-time winner at Grandview, had a conflicting view. "I didn't need the caution," he said. "I was hoping to use the lapped traffic to my advantage." Kinser was the fastest of 15 drivers eclipsing the one-lap record he set last May 31st, circling Grandview's high-banked, 1/3-mile oval in 12.644 seconds for his first Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year. He followed Mark Kinser, Billy Pauch and Haudenschild across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash to earn the second row outside starting position in the 30-lap "A" Feature. Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell, and "The Wild Child" dove under Pauch in turn two for second place early in the main event's opening lap. Mark opened a six-car-length advantage within two laps, and was 10 car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild when he entered lapped traffic two laps later. As Stevie Smith raced into fifth place from his fourth-row starting position, "The Wild Child" narrowed the gap during lap five. Haudenschild caught the leader as Steve and Stevie relegated Pauch to fifth place four laps later. Smith steered the #71M Ecowater Maxim into the high groove to pass Steve for third place 10 laps into the race. Mark was in heavy lapped traffic when "The Wild Child" took the high road into the lead in turn four late in the 12th lap. Steve threaded his #11 Quaker State Maxim between Stevie and the inside guard rail to regain third place the next time around. With a pack of backmarkers ahead of them, Haudenschild, the Kinser cousins and Stevie raced nose-to-tail through the race's middle stages. After trading third place with Stevie on successive laps, Steve took the high road around Mark for the runner-up spot early in the 19th lap. Smith relegated Mark to fourth place with a high move into the fourth corner 1 1/2 laps later. The leaders were taken out of lapped traffic later in the 20th lap when a small oil fire developed in the #12 Apple Chevrolet Gambler, forcing Fred Rahmer to stop on the front straightaway. The fire was extinguished quickly, and the race resumed with Haudenschild closely followed by Steve and a backmarker ahead of Smith and Mark. "The Wild Child" opened a comfortable lead as the green flag replaced the yellow, only to have Steve catch him with three laps remaining as he searched for a safe route through the backmarkers. Koenig's mishap brought out the caution flag, took the leaders out of lapped traffic and set the stage for Haudenschild's two-lap dash for his fourth victory of the year. Mark passed Stevie for third place in turn one early in the final lap. Andy Hillenburg, the "B" Feature winner, finished fifth, ahead of Pauch and Dave Blaney. Sammy Swindell took eighth place from Danny Lasoski with a last-lap pass in turn four. Joe Gaerte received his second Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for driving the #77 Cornwell Tools J&J past five cars from his ninth- row starting position.
