NOTES AND QUOTES: The Pennzoil World of Outlaws series stages its first three-day event of 2000 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when they take over the 1/2-mile dirt track next door to the 1.5-mile superspeedway hosting this weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup Series event. Friday's races can be seen on TNN starting at 10 p.m. EST.

Goodyear opened the 2000 Pennzoil World of Outlaws season on a winning note when Johnny Herrera drove Craig Cormack's #20 Networks Eagle to a flag-to-flag victory at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif., last Friday. One night later at the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway, Jac Haudenschild was the top finishing racer on Goodyear Eagle Dirt Track Specials, coming in third. On both nights, Goodyear-equipped racers took seven of the top-10 positions.

To help the winged sprint cars handle the ever-changing quality of the dirt, Goodyear will bring more than 400 tires to Las Vegas for the Outlaws. The track conditions can change several times during each event as the dirt dries out and the racing line changes. "Because the dirt tracks change so rapidly, sometimes from one lap to the next, we must bring a large variety of sizes and compounds for the Outlaws," said Paul Lauritzen, Goodyear's operations manager for sprint dirt racing.

The right rear tire is responsible for the majority of the work on a winged sprint car. Goodyear provides four right rear constructions and seven tire compounds in each construction, making sure the racer has the proper tire for the current conditions of the track. For Las Vegas, Goodyear will have 21 tire codes available in six sizes and six compounds.

Tire stagger plays an important part in the car's handling characteristics. Goodyear provides left rear tires in four different sizes to assist the racers in setting up the car. "Stagger doesn't diminish the work that the all-important right-rear does, but it does make setting up the left side of the car more important," Lauritzen said. "The good racers know how to make all four corners of the car work through the turns."

Leading Goodyear racers include 1999 World of Outlaws champion Mark Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Dale Blaney, Stevie Smith, Donny Schatz, Greg Hodnett, Daryn Pittman, Tim Shaffer, Joey Saldana, Jac Haudenschild and Johnny Herrera.

Goodyear-equipped cars have won every Outlaws title since Goodyear entered the series in 1981.

Goodyear won 59 of 69 feature races on the 1999 tour.

The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 2000 season features 73 events over 105 race dates at 46 facilities in 25 states and more than $10 million in purses, contingencies and point fund awards.
