SAMMY SWINDELL TAKES GOLD CUP OPENER By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 15) - Thirteen years ago, Sammy Swindell swept the Gold Cup Race of Champions. He took a big step toward repeating that feat Thursday night when the World of Outlaws opened the 41st Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions before a near-capacity crowd at Silver Dollar Speedway. After leading the first lap, Swindell fell as far back as fourth place before passing Dave Blaney with three laps remaining for the Preliminary Feature victory. Sammy started the 25-lap feature on the front row next to Vivarin Dash winner Steve Kent. Kent burst into the lead as the green flag fell, but Swindell steered the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins to the rim to pass him as they entered the second corner. Kent took the low line into turn one and passed Sammy for first place as they exited the second corner the next time around. Following a pair of caution periods, Swindell was challenging Kent when Joe Gaerte took the inside line into the fourth corner for the runner-up spot. Sammy regained second place with a high move into turn one the next time around. Blaney passed Gaerte for third, then drove the #10 Vivarin J&J past Swindell in the fourth corner late in the seventh lap. Gaerte relegated Swindell to fourth place while "The Buckeye Bullet" chased Kent into lapped traffic midway through the eighth lap. Blaney moved into the high groove, and caught the leader midway through the race. Jason Statler's third-corner spin brought out the yellow flag late in the 15th lap. While his crew discovered the #11K Selma Shell Gambler's left rear tire was losing air pressure during the caution period, Kent wasn't about to drive into the pits and relinquish first place. Blaney took the lead two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow, passing Kent high in the second corner. Sammy, who was also riding the rim, started making his way back toward the front of the field with eight laps remaining. He raced around Gaerte high in turn two early in the 17th lap and passed Kent in the fourth corner the next time around before a 20th-lap caution tightened the field. When the race resumed, "The Buckeye Bullet" started racing high through turns one and two and taking the low line in the third and fourth corners. Swindell chose the opposite approach and pressured Blaney for the next three laps. Sammy took the lead deep in the second corner and kept the #1 in the low groove throughout the final 2 1/2 laps. He was six car-lengths ahead of Blaney when the checkered flag fell. "Steve (Kent) was running real well until he got the flat tire," Swindell said amid the applause of the partisan crowd. "I'm not sure we could have done anything with him if that hadn't happened to him. I've had some bad breaks here, too." Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Gaerte, Paul McMahan, Stevie Smith, Greg Hodnett, Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Randy Tiner, "B" Feature winner Kevin Pylant, Bobby McMahan and 17th-starting Marc Zieske. Smith, the defending Gold Cup champion, received the luxury of starting the Vivarin Dash on the pole. He was racing ahead of the eight-car field with three laps remaining when he hit one of the tires separating the racing surface from the infield, breaking the front end on the #12x Beaver Drill & Tool Gambler. Tiner was in fourth place with three laps remaining in the First Snap- on Tools Heat Race when his collision with Kent caused him to spin. He finished seventh, but came back to qualify for the evening's main event with a third-place run in the "B" Feature. His 12.587-second qualifying lap was the fastest in the competitive, 49-car field. Only 1 1/2 seconds separated the top 40 qualifiers. Pylant was leading the Second Snap-on Tools Heat when a bolt in his bird cage broke, causing him to finish ninth.
