RUNNELLS, IA (April 8) -- Full Throttle Racing has hired Jason Johnson to drive its #50D Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Maxim, Debbie Cox and Team Manager Derek Beckman announced Thursday.
Johnson, who put together a miraculous charge to win the World of Outlaws Sprint Series' Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track last October 11th, will join the Cox team for the series' double-feature event at Eldora Speedway this weekend.
"We're pleased to have Jason drive for us," Cox said. "He is super, nice young man. We want to continue to run as many Outlaws shows as we can and we expect Jason to do a good job for us."
Beckman, who drove the #50D for several years before becoming the team's manager this year, hired Johnson after Joey Saldana left the team to drive the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Maxim earlier in the week.
"Jason called a few days ago and said he was very interested in joining our team," Beckman said. "He flew up here and we talked about it. He seems like a really nice kid and I know he can get the job done, so we hired him. Jason should give (five-time Knoxville Raceway champion) Terry McCarl a run for his money.
"We will race with the World of Outlaws until Knoxville Raceway starts its weekly program April 24th. After the World of Outlaws race at Knoxville at the end of the month, we will catch the series when we can. Once Knoxville's season ends, we will race with the Outlaws again."
Saldana drove the Cox Design & Fabrication sprinter in four World of Outlaws Sprint Series events, pacing the qualifying session in the Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park and finishing 10th in the NGK Spark Plugs Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. The 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year also raced into eighth place in the Preliminary Feature at Lone Star Speedway.
Johnson, nicknamed "The Cajun Sensation," recorded four top-five finishes in World of Outlaws Sprint Series main events last season, including a third-place run in the prestigious Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway.
