'KING OF THE OUTLAWS' DOMINATES FARLEY EVENT By Richard Day FARLEY, IA (July 13) - Neither a steady rain nor 22 poised challengers could keep Steve Kinser from his appointed rounds at Farley Speedway Wednesday night. Kinser showed the near-capacity crowd why he's called "The King of the Outlaws" by chopping almost a half-second off the high-banked, half-mile oval's one-lap record and leading all 25 laps in the "A" Feature. Kinser's record-setting 16.242-second (110.824-m.p.h.) qualifying run earned him his sixth Ecowater Fast-Time Award this season. The $5,200 victory was Steve's 18th of the year, and his second straight at Farley Speedway. Kenny Jacobs beat Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the main event on the pole. A light rain started falling as Jacobs burst into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Jac Haudenschild brought the race to an abrupt halt before the first lap was completed, however, when he allowed the #22 Pennzoil Maxim to hit the fourth-corner retaining wall and flip. When the green flag replaced the red, Kinser drove the #11 Valvoline Maxim around Jacobs in turn four to take the lead. Joe Gaerte was also on the move during the opening lap, steering the #9TW Gaerte Engines Maxim around Two Winners Racing teammate Greg Hodnett to take over fifth place. Andy Hillenburg challenged Jacobs for the runner-up spot during the second and third laps, which enabled Kinser to open a 10-car-length advantage. He was 15 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. Jacobs narrowed the gap to five car-lengths the next time around when Kinser hesitated behind Terry Chesak. "The King of the Outlaws" cleared Chesak within a lap, and ran away from the field before Jacobs drove the #71M Ecowater Stealth past the backmarker. Hodnett brought out the caution flag midway through the race when he clipped the retaining wall and stopped in the second corner with a flat right rear tire. When the race resumed, Jeff Swindell passed his brother, Sammy, between turns three and four to take over fourth place. Kinser was 15 car-lengths ahead of Jacobs when he caught the backmarkers again within two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow. His lead disintegrated with four laps remaining when his cousin, Mark Kinser, spun in turn one and Dennis Moore, Jr., stopped in the second corner. With the caution flag flying, Jeff Swindell and Terry McCarl changed tires and returned to the race at the back of the pack. McCarl raced back through the field to finish the "A" Feature in eighth place. Kinser raced away from the field when the race resumed, while the left side panel on Jacobs' top wing blew off, allowing Hillenburg, Gaerte and Jeff Shepard to pass him. Without the benefit of a left side panel on the top wing of the #10 Vivarin J&J during the last 13 laps, Dave Blaney finished in ninth place. Fuel flow problems in the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins caused Sammy Swindell to drift back to 13th place during the final four laps. As Kinser took the checkered flag, heavy rains hit Farley Speedway, causing the victory lane ceremony to be cancelled. Hillenburg finished the main event in second place, ahead of Gaerte, Shepard, Jacobs, Stevie Smith, Johnny Herrera, McCarl, Blaney and Hodnett. Shepard's fourth-place finish in the #77 MAC Tools J&J and Stevie's sixth-place run in the #12x Beaver Drill & Tool Gambler are the best finishes each has recorded since they joined their new teams in mid-June. Mark Kinser's 18th-place finish allowed Smith to pass him for 10th place in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings.
