Sammy Swindell Wins Rain-Shortened Eldora Event By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (April 5) - If anyone had told Sammy Swindell he would lead all 20 laps in Friday's Preliminary Feature, then be declared the winner of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series event at Eldora Speedway when Saturday's races were cancelled due to inclement weather - just like last year - he'd have told them they had been smelling too much methanol. But that's exactly what happened. The rain that started falling within minutes of the checkered flag falling Friday continued, forcing World of Outlaws officials to cancel the feature program. So, for the second consecutive April at Eldora, the preliminary program served as a single-program event. "This is the best car we've ever had at Eldora," Swindell said in victory lane. "We noticed a little miss in the motor in the Vivarin Dash. We must have leaned it out a little too much at Oklahoma City last weekend. The crew did a great job of changing engines between the dash and the feature." Swindell, whose victory last April 5th was the 200th of his World of Outlaws career, won the Vivarin Dash from outside the front row for the right to start the 20-lap feature on the pole. He drove his #1 Channellock Gambler into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and quickly built a comfortable advantage. Jac Haudenschild, a World of Outlaws "A" Feature winner at Eldora on April 15, 1995, passed Steve Kinser for second place with a low move through turn one early in the opening lap. Swindell was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when Third Heat Race winner Nick Naber brought out the caution flag with a second-corner spin early in lap three. Sammy raced away from the field again as the green flag replaced the yellow, and was a half-straightaway ahead of "The Wild Child" when he entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap. Garry Brazier stopped the #75 Mopar Stealth in turn three with a flat right rear tire late in lap six. Mark Kinser, who passed four cars during the first five laps, also fell victim to a flat tire during the caution period. Swindell opened a half-straightaway advantage within two laps after the race resumed, and caught the backmarkers again midway through the race. "The Wild Child" caught the leader as they approached a pack of backmarkers, only to have Sammy break out of lapped traffic and increase his margin with a daring move in the first corner early in the 12th lap. Dean Jacobs brought out the final caution flag of the night when he stopped on the back straightaway midway through the 13th lap. Defending King's Royal champion Johnny Herrera was equal to "B" Feature winner Dave Blaney's attempt to pass him during the ensuing restart. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove his #10 Vivarin J&J into fourth place two laps later, however. Mark drove his #5M Wirtgen Maxim back through the pack during the race's middle stages, and passed Stevie Smith for seventh place with three laps remaining. Swindell caught the backmarkers for the third time during lap 19. He almost lost the lead early in the final lap, bouncing off the cushion in dense lapped traffic in turn one, but held on to beat Haudenschild under the checkered flag by four car-lengths. "The track was different than I've ever seen it here at Eldora," Swindell said. "There was big curb in (turns) one and two, but it was real slick getting out of four. It seemed like I was always catching lapped traffic in four, and I had to slow down quite a bit." Steve Kinser finished third, ahead of Blaney, Herrera, Paul McMahan, Mark Kinser, Smith, 17th-starting Greg Hodnett and Frankie Kerr. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser appeared to be the driver to beat early, breaking Eldora's one- lap record and winning the First Heat Race from outside the third row. Mark's 12.980-second qualifying run clipped .179 seconds off the one-lap record he set last June 15th. Andy Hillenburg, the 20th-fastest qualifier in the 42-car field, won the Fourth Heat Race despite suffering a broken oil line. More problems in the #2 STP J&J forced Hillenburg into the pits during the second lap of the feature.
