Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Rolling Wheels Raceway Park
Elbridge, NY-- May 25, 2008-- The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series invades Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Memorial Day for their annual event at the sprawling 5/8-mile facility. Some of the fastest speeds all season will be seen on the long straight-a-ways, as the cars run wide open on the smooth racing surface in Upstate New York.
The track record of 15.952 seconds at 141.048 miles per hour was set by Craig Dollansky in 2004, making it the fastest track by way of average speed on the 2008 schedule.
One of the most competitive seasons in the history of the series is unfolding, as the tour celebrates its 30th Anniversary. The Top-Three drivers in the championship standings are separated by just 31 markers, with Jason Meyers leading the way. The native of Clovis, California has won five of the first 11 races this season, including in the series inaugural visit to Virginia Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
Just behind Meyers, is two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz, who is in his first season driving for Tony Stewart Racing. Schatz is 25 points behind Meyers, as he chases his third consecutive title. The native of Fargo, North Dakota is the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in each and every event this season. He has one win, with that coming at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa. Schatz has two career wins at Rolling Wheels and seven consecutive Top-10 finishes.
Craig Dollansky has won twice this season and is third in points, just six markers behind Schatz and 31 out of the lead. He has 10 Top-10 finishes in 11 starts. He is the current leader in the standings for the Qwik Liner Cup, which awards points to the Top-Five in time trials at each of the first 13 events this season.
Joey Saldana finished second at Rolling Wheels last season, driving for Kasey Kahne Racing and will seek his first win at the 5/8-mile on Memorial Day. He is fourth in points, on the strength of nine Top-10 finishes.
Steve Kinser was victorious last season at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park, to earn his ninth career A-Feature win at the largest track on the World of Outlaws schedule. The 20-time series champion won his first race at the track in 1981. He won at Williams Grove Speedway on May 15 and now has 544 career A-Feature wins.
Jac Haudenschild heads to Rolling Wheels fresh off of two consecutive fourth-place finishes. The veteran driver is a very solid sixth in points, on the strength of sixth Top-10 finishes as he continues his first season driving for the Carnahan Motorsports team.
Kerry Madsen, the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year overcame a tough start to the night at Virginia Motor Speedway, that saw him flip out of the track during the second heat race, to return with the same car to compete in the Crane Cams Dash and eventually finish sixth in the A-Feature. He is seventh in points with seven Top-10 finishes.
Chad Kemenah, the 2006 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, set fast time at Rolling Wheels last year and has had a very strong start to the 2008 campaign. He is currently eighth in points with five Top-10 finishes. He was a season-best third at Lernerville Speedway to open the East Coast swing on May 13.
Terry McCarl, is solidly in the Top-10 in points, with four Top-10 finishes as he heads to Rolling Wheels.
Daryn Pittman earned a season-best runner-up finish on Saturday night at Virginia Motor Speedway. He has six Top-10 finishes this season and was fifth at Rolling Wheels last season.
Tim Shaffer has three Top-10 finishes on the season, with two of those being Top-Fives and is just outside the Top-10 in points, heading into the Memorial Day event.
Jason Sides, the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year has two Top-10 finishes this season and is just outside of the Top-10 in points. He finished 10th at Rolling Wheels last season.
Sam Hafertepe Jr. heads to Rolling Wheels fresh off of his best career finish, a third-place effort at Virginia Motor Speedway. The sophomore driver has three Top-10 finishes in four starts during the East Coast swing.
Lucas Wolfe, who currently leads the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award standings, will return to Rolling Wheels, where he has competed with the series in the past.
Shane Stewart heads to Rolling Wheels second in the standings for the Qwik Liner Cup, just three points behind Dollansky with two events remaining in that competition. He set fast time at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway on Friday night and leads the series with three fast time honors in 2008.
Kraig Kinser returned to the World of Outlaws this season driving for Tony Stewart Racing as a teammate to Donny Schatz. He will make his first start at Rolling Wheels in several years on Monday, May 26.
Tony Bruce Jr. and Chad Hillier will both be making their second career starts at the sprawling 5/8-mile on Memorial Day.
2007 Race Recap: Steve Kinser added another win at the track last season.
The 20-time series champion was engaged in a mid-race battle with Craig Dollansky, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, and Joey Saldana. The five drivers were so close that a blanket could have been thrown over them all. They jockeyed for position lap after lap and ultimately the win, over a span of six laps while they weaved their way through lapped traffic. Kinser came out on top to of this battle to earn his fifth A-Feature win of the season and ninth career triumph at Rolling Wheels.
Joey Saldana made a late charge to finish second, with Donny Schatz third, Craig Dollansky fourth and Daryn Pittman fifth.
Craig Dollansky led from the drop of the green flag until lap 16 when Kinser used the low side of the track on the back straightaway to take the lead, with Pittman, Schatz, and Saldana all in toe. While Kinser was leading, the second position traded hands a number of times but at the line it was Dollansky holding that spot for laps 16 and 17, before Saldana took the position.
Kinser quickly began to pull away after taking the lead, before a caution with four laps to go, bunched the field up. Saldana made a couple of runs at Kinser on the restart, drawing even coming off the second turn each lap, but the 20-time series champion charged down the back straight-a-way to retain the lead and pulled away by over a second as he crossed under the checkered flags.
Donny Schatz was third, with Craig Dollansky fourth and Daryn Pittman fifth.
