ECOWATER SYSTEMS POWERS WORLD OF OUTLAWS TO RECORD TIMES By Richard Day With Ecowater Systems joining the World of Outlaws as the series' fast-time sponsor, Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout racers are breaking one-lap records at a record pace. The World of Outlaws' fire-breathing, mud-slinging sprint car racing teams have invaded 26 racing facilities this season, and 13 one-lap records have been broken. Much of the credit for this onslaught must be given to Ecowater, which awards each World of Outlaws event's fastest qualifier with $200. Andy Hillenburg, winner of seven Ecowater Fast-Time Awards, has benefitted most from the water purifier's involvement. Among those are four one-lap records. Hillenburg recorded the quickest lap ever run in a World of Outlaws event on April 15th at Bloomington Speedway, driving the #2 STP J&J around the semi-banked, 1/4-mile oval in 9.913 seconds. A week later, Andy was at it again, lowering the one-lap record at Missouri International Race Park to 12.600 seconds with a 107.143-m.p.h. qualifying run. Hillenburg's 15.902-second time trial lap at Hagerstown Speedway on May 6th was the first sub-16-second run in the history of the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Andy broke his fourth one-lap record of the year with an 18.029-second run around Lebanon Valley Speedway's high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Hillenburg's 14.348-second qualifying lap at Hales Corners Speedway last Thursday tied Rookie of the Year candidate Sid Blandford's fastest lap. But Sid received the Ecowater Fast-Time Award because he posted the time first. Blandford's pace-setting performance snapped a string of three consecutive Ecowater Fast-Time Awards by Sammy Swindell. Sammy set the record for speed on dirt with a 141-m.p.h. qualifying run around New York State Fair Speedway's one-mile oval on October 9, 1987. Lance Blevins, one of Andy's cousins, is living proof that speed runs in the family. He set the one-lap record at Battleground Speedway with a 101.657 m.p.h. qualifying run on March 20th. Jeff Shepard, the new driver of Al Hamilton's #77 MAC Tools J&J, opened the season with a one-lap record clocking at St. Augustine Speedway. His circled the semi-banked, 1/2-mile D-shaped oval in 15.275 seconds, an average speed of 117.840 m.p.h. Kenny Jacobs, driving the #71M Stealth sponsored by Ecowater, has broken two one-lap records this season. He has excelled on the high-banked tracks, winning both "A" Features at Eldora Speedway's half-mile oval and setting the one-lap standards at Pike County Speedway's 3/8-mile track (15.632 seconds) and West Virginia Motor Speedway's 5/8-mile oval (17.285 seconds). World of Outlaws drivers broke three track records in five days in March. After Jacobs' record-setting run at Pike County on March 23rd, Blevins recorded the fastest lap in the history of Battleground Speedway on March 25th. Jac Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim around State Fair Speedway's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval at an average speed of 108.258 m.p.h. two days later. Mark Kinser chopped one-third of a second off the previous one-lap record at the Terre Haute Action Track with a 17.433-second qualifying run on May 13th. Steve Kinser got into the act on May 31st at Grandview Speedway, driving the #11 Valvoline Maxim around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval in 13.173 seconds. He also won the "A" Feature that night. Two nights later, the one-lap record at Lincoln Speedway fell at the hands of Donnie Kreitz, Jr. He circled the 4/10-mile, D-shaped oval at an average speed of 101.280 m.p.h.
