KNOXVILLE NATIONALS CHAMPIONS SURGE ON IN PURSUIT OF WOO TITLE
RAPID CITY, SD (August 17) - After reaching the pinnacle in sprint car racing Saturday night, Donny Schatz and his ParkerStore World of Outlaws(WoO) team must return to normalcy and continue their quest for a WoO Championship.
Schatz, who leads the series standings by 264 points over Joey Saldana, will resume action tonight at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, SD. With 12 total WoO wins in 2006 (11 "A" and 1 preliminary victory), the Fargo, ND racer is hoping to surpass his previous career high for WoO wins in a season this year. His next win will match the 13 he won in 2003.
The week has been crazy for all those involved with the race team, most notably Schatz, who has been part of numerous interviews beginning with WindTunnel on SPEED Sunday and continuing with radio shows and newspaper interviews through Wednesday and has more booked for Friday and Saturday. He realizes how big the Knoxville Nationals victory was, but also knows there is still work to be done.
"It's been amazing to hear from so many people," said Schatz, who had finished second four times in the sports premiere race. "I said on Saturday that he hadn't really sunk in and with all that's been going on since, I'd say I haven't had the time to let it sink in. Maybe next week, we'll begin to start realizing what we accomplished.
"Right now, we've got to keep the big picture in mind and that's winning race. I've said all year the guy that wins the most races will win the championship. We've got about 20 races to go and we have to win the most from here on out to accomplish what we started the season shooting for"
This week was going to be special no matter the outcome at Knoxville. With his first WoO race at Black Hills tonight and Saturday's WoO debut at his hometown track of Nodak Speedway in Minot, this won't be your average two nights of racing.
"There isn't a better way for us to be going home," continued Schatz, who won a special race at Nodak last June. "There have been so many people that have been behind me since I started racing, and its truly an honor to go back home after winning the Knoxville Nationals. The biggest thing is that after we race on Thursday we'll have a day an half of meeting and greeting before we get to back to racing. These times don't come along too often, so we're going to try and relish the opportunity."
Schatz and his ParkerStore team made up of Ricky Warner, Shane Bowers and James Zartman will be one of many teams participating in Friday's pre-race party at the North Dakota Fairgrounds. Fans who have purchased tickets for the event can come out and meet the teams and see the cars up close.
