Swindell Dominates U.S. Dirt Nationals Prelim By Richard Day PEVELY, MO (October 10) - Sammy Swindell took a big step toward defending his U.S. Dirt Nationals championship Friday, leading all 25 laps in the feature race as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the fifth annual event at I-55 Raceway. "We'll get to start up front tomorrow in the Vivarin Dash and hopefully, we'll be able to come back and lead all 40 laps," Sammy said after winning his 10th Preliminary Feature of the year. Swindell came up with a similar quote October 3rd when he led all 20 laps in the preliminary and all 40 in the championship feature en route to his first Williams Grove National Open title. Swindell used a vastly different approach to winning Friday's race, however. He sliced .172 seconds off I-55's single-lap record with a 113.906-m.p.h. lap around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval. Then, after accepting his 10th Channellock Fast-Time Award of the season, he put himself outside the third row in the Vivarin Dash by picking the #6 inversion pill. Sammy drove his #1 Channellock Gambler past four cars during the first six laps, then used an inside move in turn four to take second from Stevie Smith as they raced toward the checkered flag. "Some of the moves we made in the dash definitely helped us in the feature," Swindell said later. "Finishing second with a pass on the last lap sure helped us. Any time you can start up front, it's an advantage." Swindell took the advantage immediately after the green flag fell in the feature, taking the high line around polesitter Jac Haudenschild in turn four. He opened a 15-car-length advantage midway through the second lap as 1995 U.S. Dirt Nationals titlist Mark Kinser challenged Haudenschild for second place. Swindell entered lapped traffic four laps into the race. Sammy increased his lead as Smith battled Kinser for third place in dense lapped traffic during the race's early stages. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader was a full- straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers by the ninth lap. Swindell was adding to his advantage two laps later when a collision involving two-time U.S. Dirt Nationals champion Steve Kinser and Lance Blevins sent Blevins' #21 Citgo J&J flipping down the back straightaway. Although Lance was uninjured in the crash, he was unable to restart the race. The 13th lap proved unlucky for Craig Dollansky, who allowed the #1W Conn West Freight Systems Maxim to hit the guard rail in turn four. The car turned over, bringing out the red flag, and Craig was forced to watch the rest of the race from the pit area. Sammy controlled the restart as Kinser challenged "The Wild Child." Mark steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim deep into turn one to pass Haudenschild for second place the next time around. Swindell caught the backmarkers again early in the 18th lap, only to have Dave Blaney flip in turn one and take out Jeff Swindell seconds later. Two lapped cars separating him from Mark allowed Sammy to begin building a comfortable lead as the green flag replaced the red. Danny Lasoski, returning to the World of Outlaws' tour in Chris Black's #1Z Maxim, raced into third place with a second- corner pass of Haudenschild early in lap 19. Swindell entered lapped traffic with 3 1/2 laps remaining. He slowed behind a pack of backmarkers, allowing Kinser to narrow the gap. Mark caught Sammy early in the final lap, and raced wheel-to-wheel with him through turn four. Kinser was in the inside groove, but Swindell had the momentum coming out of the corner and won the drag race to the checkered flag by two car- lengths. "Lapped traffic was tough," Swindell said in victory lane. "It seemed like a lot of times we weren't able to set up a lapped car the way we needed to to make the pass. There were cars running the top and bottom out there. "We made a few changes on the reds, but we probably would have been better off without them. I don't think we were slowing down as much as some of the other cars." Lasoski and Haudenschild earned the final two automatic qualifying positions in Saturday's by finishing third and fourth. Smith held off hard-charging Tyler Walker for fifth place. Completing the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Greg Hodnett, Steve Kinser, Fourth Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg and 21st-starting Donny Schatz. Schatz added 21 points to his lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year points race when Paul McMahan failed to qualify for the feature. Five of the eight fastest qualifiers in the 47-car field had problems in their heat races and lost the opportunity to race in the Vivarin Dash. While Kelly Kinser, Hodnett and Dennis Moore, Jr., qualified for the feature through the "B," second-quick Dean Jacobs and Tim Montgomery, the eighth-fastest qualifier, were unable to qualify for the evening's main event.
