Road to the money
From Terre Haute to Knoxville Nationals
EVERYWHERE, USA ~ July 18, 2003 ~ At the conclusion of the event at the Action Track, Terre Haute, IN on July 13 where a rare engine failure derailed the ParkerStores team, the crew headed the big Blue Beacon transporter Northwest on Interstate 70 to Indianapolis to regroup before heading on to Ohio for race number one of the BIG THREE money races: The Kings Royal; The Historic Big One; and the Knoxville Nationals. Keith Giles has returned home to Australia for a family planned event so this week, it is just Swank and Lambert.
So here goes: Dear Diary:
MONDAY, July 14 - We drove to Indy (Indianapolis) after the races and settled into our home away from home for the next few days, the next hotel on the list and fell into bed for some much needed sleep. This week, our garage and pits are the parking lot of the hotel we are calling "The House" for the next few days. First order of business was to pull the motor that failed last night at Terre Haute, clean it up and get it crated for shipment to Shaver. We put away everything out of place in the transporter, stripped down and cleaned out the transporter. Then the rain set in so we called it a day early. Too tired to do much more than grab a bite to eat and collapse in the room.
TUESDAY, July 15-On the agenda first thing was the trip to the air freight terminal to drop off the motor going back to Shaver and pickup one that just arrived freshened for the upcoming Kings Royal weekend at Eldora. After lunch, we dismantled the entire racecar with a fine tooth comb, cleaning and replacing as needed from top of the cage to the bottom of the frame. Went our for a little nicer dinner tonight but again, took the opportunity to rest and relax, call home to check on family and watch a little nighttime television.
WEDNESDAY, July 16-Today we installed the motor we picked up yesterday, fired up to make sure there were no leaks, the timing was good and all the other details we need to be confident that are in good shape if we need to pull it out and through it in the car in a hurry. After we were satisfied all was well, we pulled it out and stored it in the transporter and installed the race motor for this weekend and repeated the complete check over. We went over the car one more time and packed up the transporter for the trip to Ohio tomorrow. Then it was time for dirty laundry-YUCK. Had a quick dinner and more R & R with television in the room.
THURSDAY, July 17-We had a pretty uneventful trip to our hotel in Sidney, Ohio got checked into the room and went through our setup notes for Eldora and the game plan to win the $50,000 Saturday night. It is critical we know what has worked for Donny here before, especially winning the Big One last year to give him every possible advantage to win both the Kings Royal and the Big One this year.
FRIDAY, July 18-Today is final race prep morning. We went through everything again to make sure there we had no surprise tonight for the Eldora Clash. We loaded up to head for the track, headed out and SURPRISE-had serious engine problems in the transporter. Thank goodness all the crews that travel the circuit are good friends. We called the Beef Packers crew to come pull us to the track. Hope this isn't an omen for tonight or the big race tomorrow night.
We didn't qualify well, 19th, but still had a good chance through the heat to make the dash. Ok, we made the dash to get the 14th starting spot in the 30-lap feature.
Fifth is good considering how far back we started and how hard it was to pass. Now back to the bigger problem, a bad motor in the transporter.
Ah, the joys of life on the road! Until next week.....the ParkerStores Crew.
