Mark Kinser Sweeps Spring Nationals By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (March 22) - The Pennzoil World of Outlaws' first race on the Fox Sports Network couldn't have been any more exciting for its nationwide audience. Polesitter Andy Hillenburg, Dave Blaney and eventual winner Mark Kinser exchanged the lead six times before Kinser took the checkered flag three car-lengths ahead of Sammy Swindell. Saturday's $10,000 victory was Mark's third straight at Devil's Bowl Speedway as he swept the 24th Annual Spring Nationals. The first repeat "A" Feature winner on the World of Outlaws' tour this season increased his points lead to 52 points over Hillenburg. "The crew really had the #5M Wirtgen Maxim working good tonight," Kinser said. "That was one heckuva race. Andy was giving me a tough time. He's a tough competitor. Then I saw Sammy, and Blaney was poking his nose in there. This Wirtgen car was really fast tonight, and those guys were pretty quick, too." Hillenburg, the runner-up in Friday's Preliminary Feature, won the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole. He drove his #2 STP J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Blaney and Steve Kinser raced past Stevie Smith before Tyler Walker brought out the caution flag with a fourth-corner spin early in the second lap. Hillenburg maintained the lead as Mark tried to take the lead with a high move in turn four on the ensuing restart, but lost a back-straightaway drag race seconds later. Blaney, Saturday's Channellock Fast-Time Award winner, passed Hillenburg for second place three laps later as the leaders entered lapped traffic. "The Buckeye Bullet" chased Mark for three laps before steering the #10 Vivarin J&J deep into the fourth corner to take the lead late in lap seven. Kinser and Blaney exchanged the lead twice during laps eight and nine before Hillenburg pulled off a miraculous third-to-first move in turn two early in the 14th lap. Swindell, who raced into fourth place from inside the sixth row during the first 10 laps, drove his #1 Channellock Gambler past Blaney on the back straightaway for third place midway through the race. Steve Kinser did the same the next time around, relegating Blaney to fifth. After coming close on several attempts to regain the lead in dense lapped traffic, Mark beat Hillenburg across the finish line at the end of the 21st lap. Seconds later, Swindell passed the 1994 Spring Nationals champion in turn three. Kinser and Blaney used similar moves to pass Hillenburg with six laps remaining. Slicing through lapped traffic with ease, Mark was racing away from his closest pursuers when Lance Blevins' fourth-corner spin brought out the caution flag and tightened the field late in the 28th lap. With a clear track ahead of him, Kinser maintained a comfortable advantage during the final three laps. "Andy is always tough here at the Devil's Bowl, or anywhere, for that matter," Mark said. "We were geared up for him more than anybody else. It was just one of those nights where things were working good, but we weren't sure we'd come away with the win." Swindell, the winningest driver in the history of Devil's Bowl Speedway, made up for his 23rd-place finish in Friday's Preliminary Feature with a runner-up run in the main event. "It was a pretty good night for the Channellock car," Sammy said. "The driver didn't mess up tonight, so we got a good run out of it. The yellows hurt us a little bit. We wanted to keep going in the traffic. We were about even with Mark. He was a little better off the corners, but I could get in a little better than he could. It was going to be hard to pass him in the open." Steve Kinser finished the main event in third place, ahead of Blaney, Hillenburg, Danny Lasoski, Joe Gaerte, Fourth Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild, Smith and Donnie Crawford. Jeff Swindell, the 22nd-fastest qualifier in the 50-car field, raced into 14th place from outside the 11th row. Hillenburg, Crawford, Blevins and Aaron Berryhill will be racing in front of their home fans next weekend as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series heads for Oklahoma. The fire-breathing, mud-slinging sprint car racing teams are scheduled to visit Tulsa Speedway for the first time in three years Friday, then head for State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City Saturday.
