Wright Takes Finale; Blaney Claims '95 Championship By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (October 21) - Gary Wright is starting to make a habit of winning World of Outlaws events at Devil's Bowl Speedway. At the same time, Dave Blaney has stopped Steve Kinser's routine of winning World of Outlaws championships. Wright won two of the three "A" Features the Skoal Outlaw Series ran at his home track this season, including the 22nd Annual Winter Nationals before a standing-room-only crowd Saturday. The thrilling, one-car-length victory was the third of his career at the World of Outlaws' birthplace. "These fans are great," Wright said in victory lane. "I love to race here at the Devil's Bowl because these people have seen me run for 15 years." Blaney became only the fourth different driver to capture the World of Outlaws championship by simply showing up Saturday. He drove the #10 Vivarin J&J into 12th place in the main event. Wright, a former Devil's Bowl track champion, started the feature outside the 12th row. He raced into third place during the first four laps while cousins Steve and Mark Kinser battled for the lead. Steve, winner of eight Skoal Outlaw Series main events at the Devil's Bowl, earned the right to start the 30-lap feature on the pole by winning the Snap-on Tools Dash. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell. Mark kept pace with his cousin through the first 1 1/2 laps before taking the lead with a superb move. He faked a move to the outside, and darted deep into the third corner to pass Steve. Wright won a front-straightaway drag race with Danny Lasoski to take over third place the next time around. "The King of the Outlaws" kept his #11 Quaker State Maxim within two car-lengths of Mark for eight laps before regaining the lead with a turn-two pass early in the ninth lap. Steve was three car-lengths ahead of Mark when he caught the backmarkers the next time around. Wright drove the #9 Action Rent-to-Own Schnee past Mark for the runner-up spot in dense lapped traffic midway through the 11th lap. He reeled in Steve four laps later, and brought the crowd to its feet with a turn-four pass for the lead in lapped traffic late in lap 16. Steve, Friday's Preliminary Feature winner, regained first place with a turn-two pass with four laps remaining only to have Danny Wood bring out the race's only caution and nullify the move. Wright restarted the race at the front of the 24-car field and held off "The King of the Outlaws" for four laps. Only one car-length separated them at the checkered flag. "I really didn't think we'd make it tonight," Wright said. "We only had one tire, and we didn't think it was hard enough. We thought it was gone when we had that yellow. I thought Steve would go right by me because it was gone to the cords. I just tried to stay on the bottom the rest of the race. "I thought it was all over when Steve went by me with just a few laps to go. My tire was out, and it was getting tough to lap cars. I don't guess they thought I was leading. It surprised me, too. As far back as we started, I never would have dreamed we would lead this race. In the middle of the race, when I could see Steve and Mark, and I was running them down, I thought, 'I can't believe this.' I just couldn't believe this tire would take me this far." Despite missing 30% of the races, Kinser's second-place finish pushed him into ninth place in the final Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. It marked only the fourth time in the World of Outlaws' 18- year history that Kinser hasn't won the championship. Rounding out the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' season finale were Andy Hillenburg, Mark, Jac Haudenschild, Sammy Swindell, Paul McMahan, Danny Lasoski, Jeff Swindell and 16th-starting Donny Schatz. Although he had a slim chance of catching Blaney in the points race, "The Wild Child" put on a rousing performance, driving the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past 12 sprinters from inside the ninth row. He was rewarded for the effort with his fourth Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year.
