Gary Wright Wins Winter Nationals Preliminary By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (October 15) - Gary Wright never tires of visiting victory lane, but winning a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series feature race at Devil's Bowl Speedway is as good as it gets for him. Wright, a two-time champion at the series' birthplace, passed polesitter Jeff Shepard early in the first lap Friday and put together a flag-to-flag victory in the Preliminary Feature on opening night of the 26th Annual Winter Nationals. "We won this race last year and finished the Winter Nationals this year (in April)," Gary said. "This will be our last race of the year, and I'm glad we could give our team the win. The car was great. We learned something at the 360 Nationals and ran same thing tonight." Lanny Edwards prepared his legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval to perfection, allowing cars to race in the high, middle and low grooves. Wright fell behind Shepard on the first two starts, but two cautions brought them back. The third time was the charm for Wright, who won both the Spring and Winter Nationals at the Devil's Bowl in 1995. He steered his #9 Comp USA Maxim around Shepard in the first corner and raced ahead of the 24-car field throughout the 20-lap race. Danny Lasoski, who took the lead from inside the second row on the second start, fell behind Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Stevie Smith during the opening lap. He passed Shepard in dense lapped traffic six laps later, then lined up behind Smith after Mike Goodman hit an infield tire and spun in the second corner late in the eighth lap. "The Dude," who is battling Mark Kinser for first place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings, drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle deep in turn three to pass Smith late in lap 14. Lasoski caught Wright within seconds and challenged him for first place throughout the final 6 1/4 laps. Wright momentarily lost traction in the second corner early in the 18th lap, but held on for the $5,000 victory. Kinser, who passed Shepard with three laps remaining, finished in third place. Shepard earned the final automatic qualifying position in Saturday's Channellock Dash by holding off Smith for fourth. Rounding out the top 10 were Steve Kinser, 14th-starting Andy Hillenburg, Donny Schatz, Johnny Herrera and Danny Wood. Wood, who stopped the #21W Pepsi Maxim in turn four as the sprinters lined up for the Four Abreast parade lap, raced past 14 cars in the Preliminary Feature. Joey Saldana put the series' 66th event of the season off to a fast start by lowering the single-lap record by .165 seconds. Joey circled the track in 13.366 seconds, an average speed of 134.670 m.p.h. He received his eighth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Saldana lost a spot in the Channellock Dash when he slid out of the low groove and finished eighth in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 1996 Rookie of the Year won the "B" Feature and finished 13th in the evening's main event. Sammy Swindell, the leading winner at the Devil's Bowl with 11 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature victories, flipped out of turn two after completing his second qualifying lap. After he and his crew rebuilt the new #1 Channellock Stealth, the defending Winter Nationals champion raced into third place in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He finished 11th in the feature. The Casey's General Stores crew was forced to make major repairs after Floyd Hendrix hit Daryn Pittman and the #47 Maxim and sent both cars flipping on the front straightaway late in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. The Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate qualified for the feature by finishing third in the "B." Rob Chaney, Jac Haudenschild's substitute in the #22 Elden Racing Maxim, flipped in the front-stretch with two laps remaining in the "B" Feature. Haudenschild, who ranks 16th the series' point standings, suffered a broken left arm when he was struck by debris during the final lap of Thursday's main event at Battleground Speedway. Although doctors performed successful surgery on his arm Friday morning, "The Wild Child" will not race again this year. WoO
