SAMMY DENIES VICTORY IN FAREWELL WORLD OF OUTLAWS RACE By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (October 23) - Thirteen years ago, Steve Kinser was racing for a fourth straight World of Outlaws championship when Sammy Swindell stopped his streak. "The King of the Outlaws" appeared to be on his way to sweeping the feature races in the 21st Annual Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals - his final Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout event - Sunday afternoon when Swindell passed him for the victory. "There was one lane out there, and the rest of it was pretty dusty, Sammy following his 10th World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory at Devil's Bowl Speedway. "If you got off line, it was pretty slow." Kinser, seeking to tie Sammy for the most World of Outlaws "A" Feature victories at the Devil's Bowl, won the Snap-on Tools Dash for the right to start the 30-lap championship feature on the pole. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event and opened a half-straightaway advantage within three laps. He was still extending his lead later in the lap when suspension problems forced Gary Wright to stop in the first corner. "When we had that first yellow, I saw that Steve had already blistered his tire and we just let him go," Swindell said. "He does that a lot when we get to these race tracks, so he's going to have to learn how to keep his tires under him next year (in the Winston Cup series)." Within three laps after the green flag replaced the yellow, Kinser had the #11 Valvoline Maxim a half-straightaway ahead of the field again. He raced into lapped traffic two laps later. Sammy caught Steve in heavy lapped traffic late in the 10th lap, and battled him for the lead for three laps. The 13th lap proved unlucky for "The King of the Outlaws," as Swindell executed the winning pass in turn three. Two laps later, Sammy's brother, Jeff, steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim around Kinser in the second corner. Jeff caught Sammy midway through the race, and a 15-lap battle for the $8,200 first prize between the Swindell siblings followed. Sammy followed Lance Blevins for eight laps before the high school sophomore from Broken Arrow, OK, allowed his #21L Citgo J&J to spin in turn two with six laps remaining. No more than six car-lengths separated the Swindells and Kinser during the final six laps, but neither Jeff nor Steve could challenge Sammy for the lead. Jeff was four car-lengths behind when Sammy drove the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins under the checkered flag. When asked if he was going to miss his battles with Kinser, Sammy said, "Yeah, but it's probably going to continue somewhere. He may come back and run some races, and I may get to run some races over there (in the Winston Cup series)." Danny Lasoski, the fastest qualifier in Sunday's 43-car field, passed Dave Blaney for third place with five laps remaining. Rounding out the top 10 in the championship feature were Kenny Jacobs, Andy Hillenburg, Greg Hodnett, Paul McMahan and Mike Peters. Hillenburg, only 11 points ahead of Jeff when Sunday's races started, drove his #2 STP J&J past Hodnett and McMahan during the final six laps. His seventh-place finish gave him a one-point victory over Jeff in their battle for third place in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings. "This was a great weekend for us," Devil's Bowl owner Lanny Edwards said. "Steve won last night, and Sammy won today. They've won more races here than anybody. They're both veterans. We hate to lose Steve, but we'll have the other guys back to give us a good show." Edwards' semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval, under 10 inches of rain Friday, credited his hard-working crew for having the Devil's Bowl race-ready for the World of Outlaws' 1994 season finale.
