World of Outlaws Preview: Delaware International Speedway
Delmar, DE--May 11, 2009--The First State will host the World of Outlaws for the first time since 2003 on Tuesday, May 12 as the series visits Delaware International Speedway to continue a stretch of events on half-mile tracks. The race will mark just the third time since the series inaugural season of 1978 that a race has been held in the state of Delaware.
In the World of Outlaws only visit to Delaware International Speedway, Steve Kinser, the 20-time series champion, was victorious over Joey Saldana in 2003. Saldana led the first 16 laps of the 30-lap contest, before Kinser got under him to take the top spot on the 17th circuit and led the rest of the way to earn his first career win in the state of Delaware.
Six drivers currently competing with the World of Outlaws raced at Delaware International Speedway in 2003, along with Kinser and Saldana taking the top spots, Danny Lasoski, the 2001 series champion was fourth, with three-time and defending series title winner Donny Schatz sixth, Craig Dollansky seventh and Jason Sides 11th.
After competing on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, Schatz took over the lead in the championship standings and holds a 19-point advantage over Kinser. Joey Saldana is third in the standings, just 44 markers out of the lead with Jason Meyers and Craig Dollansky rounding out the Top-Five.
Slidejobs- Delaware International Speedway:
One for One: Steve Kinser won the only World of Outlaws event at Delaware International Speedway in 2003, besting Joey Saldana and Greg Hodnett. The 20-time series champion has competed just twice in his storied career in the state of Delaware, with the other start coming in 1993 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds. Kinser is the currently second in the World of Outlaws point standings and has finished in the Top-10 in all but two races this season.
Nearly a win: Joey Saldana finished second to Steve Kinser in 2003 at Delaware International Speedway, after leading the first 16 laps of the race. The 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year leads the series with five wins this season, with two of those coming on half-mile tracks. Saldana earned his ninth Top-10 finish of the season last Saturday night at Eldora, coming all the way from the back of the field to finish ninth. He is currently third in points, just 44 markers behind Donny Schatz.
A solid finish: Danny Lasoski finished fourth in the World of Outlaws lone race at Delaware International Speedway in 2003. The 2001 series champion continues to climb in the series standings this season and is up to the eighth spot in his first season driving for the Parsons Motorsports team as the schedule really begins to pick up this week.
"We have been running mainly on the weekend and getting rained out," said Lasoski. "I am ready to run five nights in a row that would be a good deal."
Looking for a few more spots: Craig Dollansky finished sixth at Delaware International Speedway in his debut at the half-mile in 2003. He finished fourth last Saturday night at Eldora to earn his 11th Top-10 finish of the season, which moved him into the fifth spot in points as he continues his first season behind the wheel for Kasey Kahne Racing as a teammate to Joey Saldana.
"You definitely want to be running strong right now," Dollansky recently said. "We have not been starting where we should near the front and have to dig ourselves out a hole. We had the motor guys working with us at Eldora on some things and we are working to get some stuff sorted out. We'll just keep working at it and hopefully we'll get ourselves up front more and have better starting positions."
First time visitor: Jason Meyers, who is currently fourth in the World of Outlaws standings, will make his first visit to Delaware this week for the event on Tuesday, May 12. The native of Clovis, California has won twice this season and has 11 Top-10 finishes as he chases his first series title.
A return visit: Jason Sides, who is currently sixth in the World of Outlaws standings, competed at Delaware International Speedway in 2003, finishing just outside of the Top-10. The 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner won his first Crane Cams Dash of the season last Saturday night at Eldora and has 11 Top-10 finishes this season as he closes in on his first win of the campaign.
Adding another track to the list: Jac Haudenschild will be making his first visit to Delaware International Speedway this week. The veteran driver who will be inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame this year, has competed once in the state of Delaware during his career, finishing second at the State Fairgrounds in 1993. He has six Top-10 finishes this season and is just outside of the Top-10 in points.
More first timers: Kraig Kinser, Lucas Wolfe, Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Brian Ellenberger will all be making their first start at Delaware International Speedway this week and first visit to the state all together.
