JEFF KEEPS SWINDELLS' STREAK ALIVE AT DAVENPORT By Richard Day DAVENPORT, IA (July 12) - Jeff Swindell kept his family's winning streak alive Wednesday when he captured the World of Outlaws' inaugural "A" Feature at Davenport Speedway. Sammy Swindell, Jeff's older brother, entered the Davenport event having won the Skoal Outlaw Series' last five feature races, including three main events. The $6,000 victory, Jeff's second of the season, left him only 24 points behind Stevie Smith in their battle for fourth place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. It also pushed him over the $100,000 mark in earnings for the third straight year. Mark Kinser opened the evening's festivities by setting Davenport's one-lap record, circling the slightly-banked, D-shaped oval in 17.421 seconds. After receiving his 14th EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year, he picked the #6 inversion pill, putting sixth- quick Terry McCarl on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. Swindell, the fourth-fastest qualifier, earned the right to start the 30-lap "A" Feature outside the front row by following McCarl across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. McCarl, from nearby Pleasant Hill, IA, burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and opened a 10-car-length advantage within two laps. Steve Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the second corner to pass Danny Lasoski for third place the next time around. McCarl caught the backmarkers six laps into the race, and maintained a comfortable lead in lapped traffic. He increased the margin to a half-straightaway during the 10th lap when he raced into the clear and Swindell slowed behind a pack of backmarkers. McCarl, the runner-up in the World of Outlaws' close Rookie of the Year race in 1992, steered the #24 McCroskey Chevrolet Maxim into the high groove four laps later. At the same time, Jeff swerved to the low side of the track and started gaining on the leader. Swindell caught McCarl early in the 17th lap, and challenged him for two laps before steering the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim deep into the second corner to take the lead. The red flag was flying the next time around as Knoxville Raceway competitors Craig Dollansky and Skip Jackson crashed in turn three. Dollansky was racing next to Jackson when he tried complete the pass before clearing him. He drove the #55 Jensen Construction Trostle over the front of Jackson's #12 Beard Welding sprinter and flipped over the retaining wall. Jackson also turned over in the melee. Less than three car-lengths separated Jeff, McCarl, Steve Kinser and Lasoski during the final 10 laps. Swindell maintained the lead by racing in the low groove. While the rim-riding McCarl managed to catch Jeff in turns three and four, he couldn't complete the pass for the lead. McCarl was still in second place when the white flag fell. Seconds later, however, a broken piston ignited a fire on the left side of the car. Although Terry never slowed down, Steve Kinser passed him on the back straightaway and Lasoski relegated him to fourth place with the checkered flag in sight. After crossing the finish line, McCarl darted into the infield and stopped next to the fire truck. "I didn't quit; I stayed with it," McCarl yelled as he jumped out of the car following his best-ever finish in a World of Outlaws "A" Feature. Sammy Swindell finished the main event in fifth place, ahead of Mark Kinser, Snap-on Tools Heat Race winners Dave Blaney and Andy Hillenburg, Jac Haudenschild and Greg Hodnett. Engine problems in the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim caused Hodnett to qualify more than a second off Kinser's pace in time trials. He made up for it in the "A" Feature, however, passing 12 cars on his way to a 10th-place finish. For the outstanding effort, Hodnett received his sixth Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year. Smith surrendered fifth place when his crew changed the right rear tire on the #71M EcoWater Maxim during the 20th-lap red period. He raced into 13th place from the back of the pack during the final 10 laps. TNN: The Nashville Network is televising the Amoco Knoxville Nationals "Live in '95."
