Hillier Perseveres Through First Race at 'The Grove'
MECHANICSBURG, PA (May 17) -- Chad Hillier knew his first visit to legendary Williams Grove Speedway would be tough. The World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate's prediction couldn't have been more accurate.
With the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim's engine failing to produce enough RPMs, Hillier was the 52nd-fastest qualifier in the 55-car field -- .842 seconds off Lucas Wolfe's 106.746-MPH pace-setting lap around Mechanicsburg's semi-banked, ½-mile oval. Hillier raced past four cars in the "D" Feature, but finished two positions away from qualifying for the "C."
"There are a lot of good cars up here, plus we struggled trying to get the motor to produce more RPMs," Hillier said. "The guys around here really know how to get around this place. The car was good coming out of the corners, but wouldn't pull all the way down the straightaways for some reason. The straightaways here are fairly long. We weren't too far off with the car; it was just that we weren't building enough speed. Everybody who was fast was carrying a lot of speed into the center of the corner, but we were only pulling about halfway down the straightaways. We were giving up a lot right there. The car was coming off good, but it just wouldn't RPM up.
"We're going to take one of the high-speeds off and, hopefully, we'll get higher RPMs. We're not sure if we were starving the engine for fuel or we're still too rich. We couldn't tell if we're flooding it or have it too lean. Lately, when we're low on RPMs, it's usually an issue with the fuel, so we're going to work with that and find out what works."
Hillier and DIRT Inc. will get another chance to conquer "The Grove" Friday. The race will be taped for a June 3rd telecast on SPEED.
