Smith Breaks Through at Canandaigua Speedway By Richard Day CANANDAIGUA, NY (June 3) - After 28 races in 1998, Stevie Smith led the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series with six main event victories and ranked fourth after leading the point standings for two weeks. Smith, a more consistent driver this season, won his first main event of the season Thursday when the series' annual New York tour climaxed at Canandaigua Speedway. The $8,000 victory was Smith's 14th top-five finish of the year. He has driven his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the top 10 22 times and ranks fifth in the standings, only four points behind Donny Schatz. "We've been on the phone with my dad (1998 Channellock Mechanic of the Year Steve Smith) all night long," Stevie said. "He's stuck in the shop building motors, but Devin (Deluzio) and the guys did a great job. "It's a big relief to finally get one. We've been so close so many times this year (six second-place finishes so far). I have to thank Ingersoll-Rand for all their help. Without them, we couldn't do this." Smith, the ninth-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. He earned the right to start the 25- lap "A" Feature inside the second row by following Sammy Swindell and Tim Shaffer across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and was racing away from the field when Danny Lasoski's third- corner spin brought out the caution flag late in the third lap. Kevin Gobrecht surrendered eighth place when the #93 Amoco J&J hit the wall and flipped in turn two as the race resumed. Smith used an inside move in the first corner to pass Shaffer for second place as the green flag replaced the red. Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jeff Shepard won a front-straightaway drag race with Shaffer the next time around. Swindell was six car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic early in the eighth lap. Shepard passed Smith for second place with a low move in turn four seconds later. Schatz, who started inside the seventh row, drove the #15 Parker Stores Maxim past seven cars during the first eight laps. He raced past Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser for fifth place deep in the third corner late in the ninth lap. Swindell, Shepard and Smith raced nose-to-tail during the middle stages of the race. Stevie beat Shepard into turn three to regain second place late in lap 12. Smith chased Swindell for five laps before catching the leader in lapped traffic. He took over first place with a high move around Sammy, who was trying to pass his brother, Jeff, between the first and second corners. "That was one of those times where it was better to be running second in traffic," Stevie said. "I saw Sammy was going to be bottled up on the bottom, so I tried the top and it worked." Shepard passed Swindell for second place early in the 22nd lap, only to have Schatz pass them both in the low groove between turns three and four. Schatz jumped the cushion in the first corner seconds later, allowing Swindell and Shepard to regain second and third place. The 1997 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year came back to pass Shepard deep in the first corner, then got by Swindell in the low groove in turn four later in the 24th lap to claim the runner-up spot for the second straight night. Smith was seven car-lengths ahead of Schatz when he took the checkered flag for the 48th victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career. Swindell finished third, ahead of Shepard, Kinser, Jac Haudenschild, Steve Kinser, Shaffer, Johnny Herrera and Vivarin Fast- Time Award winner Dale Blaney. Steve Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into seventh place on his 44th birthday. In the 13 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series races run on his birthday, "The King of the Outlaws" has won twice at Lebanon Valley Speedway and once at Lincoln Speedway and Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Blaney received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 14.954-second, 120.369-m.p.h., lap around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. WoO
