KINSER SPOILS SAMMY'S PERFECT NIGHT AT CANANDAIGUA By Richard Day CANANDAIGUA, NY (June 8) - Sammy Swindell was well on his way to a flawless performance Wednesday night when a standing-room-only crowd packed Canandaigua Speedway for the final stop on the World of Outlaws' annual June tour of New York state. Swindell received his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year, won the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race and earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. He even led the main event's first 10 laps before Steve Kinser spoiled what would have been Sammy's first victory at Canandaigua. Kinser held off Swindell during the final 15 laps to win by six car- lengths. The victory was Steve's 11th of the year, and the fourth of his career at Canandaigua's semi-banked, half-mile oval. "Running behind Sammy, I was just searching the track to find the fast line," Kinser said in victory lane. "I ran the high line early, but when I got into lapped traffic I tried the bottom. I felt like that was the place to be after I got the lead. The #11 Valvoline Maxim ran well no matter where I was on the race track." Sammy burst into the lead immediately after the green flag fell, only to have Greg Pottorff's third-corner flip late in the opening lap stop the 25-lap race. Swindell retained the lead when the green flag replaced the red, and entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap. Sammy steered the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins through lapped traffic with ease, but was unable to shake Kinser from his rear bumper. Swindell lost the lead when he took the high line around Donnie Kreitz, Jr., and Todd Shaffer in turn two early in lap 11. "The King of the Outlaws" passed all three with a quick move to the deepest point in the second corner. Steve opened a 10-car-length advantage within two laps. He was a half- straightaway ahead of Swindell when a collision involving "B" Feature winner Rob Hart and Craig Keel sent Keel's #8 flipping in the second corner. The red flag was thrown, setting up a two-lap dash for the $5,200 first prize. Unfortunately for Swindell, four backmarkers separated him from Steve when the race resumed, keeping him from challenging for the lead during the final two laps. Sammy's third runner-up run of the year pushed him within eight points of Dave Blaney in their battle for second place in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings. Andy Hillenburg finished the "A" Feature in third place, ahead of Mark Kinser, Kenny Jacobs, Blaney, 12th-starting Joe Gaerte, Jeff Swindell, Jac Haudenschild and Billy Pauch. Blaney, a Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout "A" Feature winner at Canandaigua on June 5, 1991, passed Hillenburg and Mark during the first four laps, and took third place from Sammy's brother, Jeff, 10 laps later. But Blaney discovered during the 23rd-lap red period that his right rear tire had been punctured. After the #10 Vivarin J&J crew changed the tire, "The Buckeye Bullet" restarted the race at the back of the pack. He finished in sixth place. The throttle linkage in the #71M Ecowater Stealth broke during the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race, causing Jacobs to finish last. He ran third in the "B" Feature to secure the fifth row inside starting position in the main event. Jacobs passed three sprinters before executing a daring move past Jeff Swindell and Mark Kinser deep in the fourth corner as the leaders took the white flag. Mark returned the favor in turn four during the final lap to claim fourth place. Blaney and Jeff's Two Winners Racing teammate, Joe Gaerte, raced past the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim for sixth and seventh place, respectively, while the white flag waved.
