Swindell Goes Two-For-Two in Calistoga Prelims By Richard Day CALISTOGA, CA (August 30) - What a change the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has undergone in the last month. In late July, the drivers points lead changed with each passing race. Now, at the end of August, Sammy Swindell is unbeatable as he threatens to clinch the championship. Swindell ran his winning streak to six Saturday at Calistoga Speedway, leading the final eight laps in the Harvest Classic's Second Preliminary Feature. Sammy's winning streak is the longest on the World of Outlaws' tour since Steve Kinser won 12 straight in 1987. "We've been blessed with a really good team," Sammy said. "The Channellock car has been running really well, and we've been able to get some breaks. We were blessed with a safe race tonight, and we hope to come back tomorrow and do it again. "Hopefully, we can continue this streak. Maybe we can finish out the season with 24 or 25 more in a row." Swindell, who has his sights set on a third World of Outlaws championship, saw his lead over defending Harvest Classic champion Dave Blaney grow to a season-high 84 points during the second preliminary program. Stevie Smith received his third Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing Saturday's qualifying session. He picked the #6 inversion pill, putting Danny Lasoski on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. "The Dude," driving the #83 Beef Packers Stealth in his first World of Outlaws event, earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole by winning the five-lap race. Lasoski burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the 20- lap feature. Outside polesitter Andy Hillenburg steered his #2 STP J&J all over Calistoga's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval as he tried to take the lead, but followed "The Dude" across the finish line at the end of the opening lap. Greg Hodnett, whose crew changed the engine in the #11H Selma Shell Maxim after time trials, stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire early in lap two. Hillenburg took advantage of the caution, passing Lasoski deep in turn four as the green flag replaced the yellow. Swindell, who started outside the third row, followed Hillenburg past "The Dude" to take over second place. Two laps later, second-row starters Jac Haudenschild and Randy Tiner raced wheel-to-wheel down the back straightaway and into the third corner before Haudenschild surged ahead in turn four. Tiner came back with a second-corner pass of "The Wild Child" to take over fourth place the next time around. Hillenburg opened a seven-car-length advantage by lap six, and entered lapped traffic midway through the race. The 13th lap proved unlucky for Andy, however, as he slowed on the back stretch and surrendered the lead when he coasted into the infield with a broken rear end. That was the break Swindell needed to extend his streak. He opened a half-straightaway advantage within two laps, and was a full straightaway ahead when Smith passed Lasoski for the runner- up spot with seven laps remaining. Smith narrowed the gap in dense lapped traffic, but was still a half-straightaway behind when Sammy took the checkered flag. Swindell's eighth Preliminary Feature victory of the year wasn't as easy as it seemed, however. "There was a little hole in the bottom of (turns) one and two, and on about the second lap, (Jac) Haudenschild drove through there and bottomed out," Sammy explained. "He threw a big clump of mud that probably weighed about 30 pounds or more and it knocked my arm guard in. The arm guard started catching my elbow and the steering wheel. I managed to shove it out and it started picking up the wind and a lot of loose stuff. I'm going to have some bruises on my arm tomorrow." Lasoski finished the second Preliminary Feature in third place, ahead of Haudenschild, Blaney, Tiner, Mark Kinser, 12th- starting Steve Kinser, Johnny Herrera and Jeff Swindell. Sean Fenn raced through the field in the "B" Feature and crossed the finish line third, only to have officials disqualify him for a muffler violation.
