Stevie Smith Dominates Harvest Classic Finale By Richard Day CALISTOGA, CA (September 6) - In 1993, when Stevie Smith dominated the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' tour of California by winning five of 10 feature races, Calistoga Speedway was the only track he didn't conquer. Smith made up for that in a big way Sunday in the championship feature at the Sixth Annual Harvest Classic, leading all 30 laps. The $16,000 victory was Smith's 13th during the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 20th Anniversary Season. "I've said it all year, but the credit goes to my dad (Steve Smith) and Devin (Deluzio)," Stevie said. "They've given me a great car all year long. The Ingersoll-Rand car seems like it's pretty strong again, and maybe these last few races can make a difference. We'll give it our best shot the rest of the year. We weren't in the picture for the really big races, but it feels good to be fast again." The #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit was fast throughout the Harvest Classic. Smith scored the most points in the preliminary programs - with second- and fourth-place finishes in the features - to earn the pole position in the championship race. Smith burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and was eight car-lengths ahead of Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the sixth lap. Mark Kinser exchanged sixth place with "B" Feature winner Jeff Swindell during the first two laps, then drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim past outside polesitter Danny Lasoski early in lap three. Defending Harvest Classic champion Sammy Swindell steered his #1 Channellock Stealth into the low groove between turns three and four to pass opening-night Preliminary Feature winner Jac Haudenschild for third late in the 10th lap. Manufacturers Rookie of the Year candidate Dale Blaney took the leaders out of lapped traffic when his second-corner spin brought out the caution flag two laps later. First Racing Champions Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg passed Mark Kinser as the green flag replaced the yellow. He also used a use a low move between the first and second corners to pass Haudenschild the next time around to take over fourth place early in the 14th lap. Jeff Swindell and Lasoski took the low line through the first and second corners to relegate Mark to eighth place early in lap 15. Smith was approaching the backmarkers two laps later when the #75 Mopar Maxim suffered a flat right rear tire, causing Paul McMahan to spin in turn two. Jeff steered the #104+ Octane Boost J&J into the low groove between the third and fourth corners to pass Haudenschild for fifth late in the 19th lap. Stevie was 10 car-lengths ahead of Kinser when they entered lapped traffic again late in lap 24. "The King of the Outlaws" narrowed the gap to three car-lengths within a lap, and lined up behind Smith after Peter Murphy stopped in the second corner with a flat right rear tire two laps later. Kinser was unable to keep pace with Smith as the race resumed, and was in turn four when Smith took the checkered flag. "I was having trouble maneuvering in traffic, and the cautions really helped a bunch," Stevie admitted. The 47th "A" Feature victory of Stevie's career pushed him past 1989 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Bobby Davis, Jr., into sixth place on the series' all-time list. Smith also moved past Mark Kinser into third place in the point standings. Sammy Swindell finished third, ahead of Hillenburg, Jeff Swindell, Haudenschild, Lasoski, 20th-starting Randy Hannagan, Mark Kinser and Johnny Herrera. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series is scheduled to continue its tour of California with $40,000 events at Kings Speedway Friday and Santa Maria Speedway Saturday.
