Blaney Wins Calistoga Prelim in Photo Finish By Richard Day CALISTOGA, CA (September 2) - Dave Blaney and Steve Kinser have staged some epic battles on the track and in the point standings the last 2 1/2 years. But the final three laps of Saturday's Preliminary Feature at Calistoga Speedway produced some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing in their careers. After leading laps 5-17, Kinser was racing in heavy lapped traffic when Blaney took the high line out of the second corner and veered deep into turn three to regain first place late in the 18th lap. "The King of the Outlaws" stayed within striking distance as the leaders took the white flag, and was next to Blaney when the #10 Vivarin J&J slid out of the groove in turn three. They took the checkered flag side-by-side, with Blaney winning by a foot. "I didn't see Steve on the last lap, but I figured he was coming," Blaney said in victory lane. "Then, all of a sudden, he was there as we crossed the finish line." The $4,000 victory, Blaney's second in as many nights at Calistoga, was his fifth in a World of Outlaws Preliminary Feature this season. Kinser broke Calistoga's one-lap record for the second consecutive night with a 16.546-second qualifying run. After winning the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race, "The Buckeye Bullet" earned the right to start the feature on the pole by beating Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He burst into the lead as Jac Haudenschild battled Kinser for second place during the opening lap. The red flag was flying the next time around as Lindsey Casto and George Graham collided and flipped in turn three. Two laps later, Paul McMahan brought out the caution flag when mechanical problems forced him to stop in the fourth corner. Kinser stayed close behind Blaney after the race resumed, challenging him for the lead in every corner on Calistoga's semi- banked, 1/2-mile oval. He passed "The Buckeye Bullet" high in the second corner early in lap five, and caught the backmarkers with a 10- car-length advantage five laps later. After battling Haudenschild for three laps, Blaney closed to within five car-lengths of Kinser. He caught him with five laps remaining as "The King of the Outlaws" approached Brent Kaeding, Kevin Pylant and Keith Nafzger. "The Buckeye Bullet" followed Kinser in the low groove for two laps before taking the high line into the second corner with three laps remaining. Then he brought the near-capacity crowd to its feet when he threaded the #10 between Kinser and the inside berm in turn three to regain the lead. Kinser, winner of four World of Outlaws "A" Features at Calistoga, kept his #11 Quaker State Maxim within a car-length of Blaney during the final 2 1/2 laps. They raced side-by-side through turns three and four, with Blaney winning the photo finish by a matter of inches. "I missed the line heading into turn three, and lost some of my momentum," Blaney admitted. "I didn't get off four very well, either. I knew Steve would be coming, so I did all I could to hold him off." "The Wild Child," a Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature winner at Calistoga in 1989, finished in third place. Rounding out the top 10 were Keith Kauffman, Jeff Swindell, Andy Hillenburg, 12th-starting Danny Lasoski, Randy Hannagan, Stevie Smith and Greg Hodnett. Randy Tiner won the "B" Feature, then raced into 15th place from the 10th row in the evening's main event.
