GAERTE WINS CALISTOGA OPENER WHEN KINSER LOSES MUFFLER By Richard Day CALISTOGA, CA (September 2) - Steve Kinser was dominating the World of Outlaws' opening-night preliminary program at Calistoga Speedway Friday night - setting a new one-lap record, winning the Vivarin Dash and leading all 20 laps in the feature race - when disaster struck. For the second time in the last six Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout racing programs, a muffler problem on the #11 Valvoline Maxim caused "The King of the Outlaws" to be disqualified. Kinser, winner of the last three World of Outlaws "A" Features at Calistoga, was racing through lapped traffic with four laps remaining in the Preliminary Feature when the muffler popped out of the header. World of Outlaws rules and California law prohibit cars racing without properly functioning mufflers, so officials were forced to disqualify him. "If it had happened to anybody else, they'd be penalized too," a discouraged Kinser said after being credited with a 20th-place finish. Joe Gaerte was the beneficiary of Kinser's misfortune. He started alongside "The King of the Outlaws" on the front row and followed him around Calistoga's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval throughout the Preliminary Feature. He was entering the third corner when Kinser took the checkered flag. Kinser burst into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the evening's main event, and opened a 10-car-length advantage within two laps. Jeff Swindell raced past Gaerte for the runner-up spot while his brother, Sammy, took fourth place from Andy Hillenburg during the fourth lap. They followed Kinser into lapped traffic the next time around. Jeff reeled in "The King of the Outlaws" while Sammy challenged Gaerte for third place during lap eight. Hillenburg's attempt to regain fourth place cost him four positions midway through the race. He steered his #2 STP J&J deep into turn one, but slid up and over the cushion in the second corner. Ignition problems forced Greg Hodnett and Paul McMahan to stop late in the 11th lap and on the ensuing restart before Sid Blandford's #31 B&B Excavating Avenger hit the outside retaining wall and flipped down the back straightaway. After the green flag replaced the red, Kinser, Jeff, Gaerte and Sammy raced together for two laps before Jac Haudenschild joined the leaders. "The King of the Outlaws" ran away from Jeff during the 15th lap, and caught the backmarkers again with a half-straightaway advantage the next time around. Kinser was racing among the backmarkers when his muffler vibrated out of the header with four laps remaining. His mechanical malfunctions became contagious during the next lap when the top wing on the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim collapsed into Jeff's view, allowing Gaerte - one of his Two Winners Racing teammates - and Sammy to relegate him to third place. Receiving credit for the victory gave Gaerte the opportunity to stand in the winner's circle for the first time this year. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were the Swindell brothers - Sammy and Jeff - "The Wild Child," Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Dave Blaney, Hillenburg, Steve Kent, Kenny Jacobs, Johnny Herrera and Stevie Smith. Herrera, the 18th-fastest qualifier in the 33-car field, started outside the eighth row and drove the #77 MAC Tools J&J past seven sprinters to finish in ninth place. Kinser received his 11th Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year after shaving .02 seconds off the one-lap record he set at Calistoga last September 3rd with a 16.889-second, 106.578-m.p.h. qualifying lap.
