Dave Blaney Doubles-Up on Flag Day By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (June 14) - Even if Dave Blaney doubled as a Hollywood screen writer, it's doubtful he could write a more incredible script than the one he followed Saturday. "The Buckeye Bullet" raced into the wee hours of Flag Day winning the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' "A" Feature at Bloomington Speedway. Several hours later, he caught a plane for Michigan and finished eighth in an ARCA race, then drove to Eldora Speedway and won another World of Outlaws main event. "I think I'm going to sleep in tomorrow," Blaney said after his heroic day. "Last night (at Bloomington) worked me hard, tonight worked me hard and I spent this afternoon riding around in the sun. It's been a long two days." It's also been a while since anybody won successive Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features. It was four weeks and nine events ago that Mark Kinser won consecutive main events at Williams Grove Speedway and Hagerstown Speedway. Blaney, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field, received a break when fourth-quick Randy Kinser crashed in the Fourth Heat Race. Kinser's misfortune put Blaney on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. He followed Stevie Smith across the finish line in the five-lap race for the right to start the "A" Feature outside the front row. "The Buckeye Bullet" burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, only to have Dion Hindi flip on the front straightaway and bring out the red flag. When the race started a second time, Smith stayed even with Blaney on the front stretch and surged ahead in the second corner to take the lead. The next crash - this one by Rob Chaney - had even more of an effect on Blaney. As Smith raced past the flipping Chaney in turn three late in the third lap, "The Buckeye Bullet" collided with fellow Ohioan Jac Haudenschild as they tried to avoid the crash. "The Wild Child" spun and Blaney suffered a flat left rear tire, forcing both to restart the race at the back of the pack. Smith raced away from Kinser as the race resumed, only to have Tim Allison's turn-two flip bring out the red flag again late in the fourth lap. World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidates Donny Schatz and Paul McMahan collided in turn two three laps after the ensuing restart. Schatz managed to restart, but McMahan retired to the pits with a fuel line problem. The #22 Pennzoil Maxim suffered a flat right rear tire late in the 10th lap, causing Haudenschild to stop in turn four. As the race resumed, Kinser took the lead with a low move in turn three. Sammy Swindell also passed Smith during the restart. Blaney had his #10 Vivarin J&J in third place by lap 13. He regained the lead thanks to a bizarre chain of events two laps later. Mark Kinser lost first place when he collided with the spinning Kevin Huntley in the fourth corner. Swindell took his #1 Channellock Gambler for a spin as he avoided the crash, giving first place back to "The Buckeye Bullet." Haudenschild was racing back through the field four laps later when he flipped on the back straightaway. Schatz' crew replaced the buckling top wing on the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler during the red period, and he raced back into eighth place by lap 20. Schatz' progress stopped seven laps later, however, when he clipped the turn-four retaining wall and suffered a flat right rear tire. He roared back into 11th place in the final four laps. Blaney raced away from the field after the final restart, and took the checkered flag as Smith exited the fourth corner. "It was a heckuva race," Blaney said in victory lane. "I knew we were fast enough to win, but when we wrecked early, I thought the night was over. Kenny (Woodruff, his crew chief) pumped me back up, telling me we had plenty of time and the top lane of the race track was pretty open. "The crew did a great job. It seems like lately we've been gaining on our setups. Here in the last two weeks, we've been a lot better. "Here at Eldora, you've got to try to pass the cars while they're bunched up. It's a lot harder to make progress when they're out in the open, so you really need to make your move after the restarts." Steve Kinser finished the "A" Feature in third place, ahead of Danny Lasoski, 16th-starting Johnny Herrera, Swindell, Joey Saldana, Mark Kinser, Greg Hodnett and Joe Gaerte.
